“I was on the phone with your mom, and she told me that it’s one of your favorites. That you make her cook it every time you go back home. She gave me the ingredients, and I ordered them from the Caribbean market. Then she sat on FaceTime with me for the last couple of hours while I seasoned and made it,” She smiled as she looked around at her hard work. I kissed her forehead. It was shit like that that let me know without a doubt that I was supposed to marry her.
It wasn’t just about a recipe; it was about her willingness to learn something I liked from my culture. I respected it. Not to mention the fact that she talked to my mom more times a day than I did. My parents called her “Buttah” because my moms said her skin reminds her of Coco Butter.
“Preciate you, baby. Let me sample everything because I made plans for us for tonight.” I didn’t mean to disregard her effort, but I had already planned the whole night for the proposal.
“Zohan Richardson, I’ve been standing on my feet for over six hours, cooking for you. I don’t care if we have to stuff gravy and chicken in our damn pockets. Okay? You’re eating this tonight.” She snapped with her arms folded.
I shook my head at her; Remy was sweet as fuck in every way. Soft spoken, girly, long nails, always put together. But don’t let her looks fool you. I loved that she didn’t take shit from anybody. Rem wouldn’t hesitate to check you if you had her fucked up. Me included.
“Baby, fix me some food so I can taste what you cooked,” I doubled down. Not paying attention to her attitude. I didn’t want to be arguing with her, especially not leading into tonight.
She walked around the kitchen, opened the pots and pans, and slammed the food on the plate. Every time she put something different on it, I could hear the metal spoon slap against the glass, and I had to fight to hold it together and not laugh at her ass.
She came over to me, put the plate in front of me, dropped the fork, and turned around. I caught her wrist.
“Remy, if I gotta eat the attitude that came with this plate, you can take this shit back, Shorty,” I chuckled at her knowing I was getting under her skin.
She broke character and burst into laughter, “You are such an asshole,” she slapped my arm playfully as I pulled her into my lap and kissed her cheek.
I tasted the food that she made, and I was surprised that it actually tasted just like my mom’s cooking. She had taught me this same recipe, and every time I made it for myself, it never hit the same, but Rem’s food tasted just like it.
“This is fire, Ma.” I complimented her as I bit into the plantain and rubbed her leg.
“I know, I got it from the source.” She bragged as she got off my lap and fixed herself a small plate of it.
She sat across from me and started a conversation like she just wasn’t ready to whoop my ass about not wanting to eat her food, but I let her make it.
“I had a meeting with Trouble, Jax, and Judah today,” I said as I scooped up some of the chicken and ate it. The food was so damn good that as soon as we got up from the table, I was going to cancel our dinner plans for real.
“How did that go?” she asked, glancing up from her plate.
“They promoted Sanchez and me to underbosses,” I informed her.
“Baby! That’s good! Congratulations! We need to do something to celebrate,” she smiled with a plantain in her hand.
“You cool with that? I’m going to be gone a lot more.” I asked her for her opinion. Although we hadn’t moved in together just yet, we had made our relationship official months ago.
“Yeah, it’s not fine, but it’s fine. We made it work back then, I’m sure we can make it work now.” She said as she gave me this big, silly ass grin.
I finished the plate, and she washed the dishes while I got out my work attire and got ready for the night ahead. Remy came into the shower as I was getting out to get dressed. It was a time in my life when I could never see myself proposing to any woman. But now, I couldn’t imagine her walking around without my last name attached to her. I wasn’t even nervous; I knew she’d say yeah. That’s why it never worked out with those other niggas, cause Remy was made for me.
“What color are you wearing tonight, Zohan?” She peeked her head out of the closet and looked at me as I walked around in my boxers.
“Blue,” I answered her.
“I think I can match that. You know I don’t have all my clothes here,” she said as she went to the space that she had made in my closet, and I heard the hangers sliding from side to side.
I walked into the closet behind her, and she turned and grabbed my dick. I chuckled, grabbed her hand, and looked her dead in the eye. “If you don’t want to get fucked in here, stop playing with me.”
“Don’t threaten me with a good dick.” She said with her eyebrow raised, making me shake my head at her crazy ass.
“Man, hurry up, Shorty.” I grabbed my clothes and started to throw them on. It was almost time for us to be down at the helipad, and she was trying to distract me.
We made it there without a moment to spare.
“We’re going on a helicopter ride?” She asked in confusion.
“Yeah,” I said as she shrugged and grabbed my hand. Every week for the last four or five months, Rem and I had been having a date night. I knew that she probably thought that this was just a regular night I had planned.
