Arabella smiled tightly. “If I could, I would, like Pen, climb back into the well and change the wish. Not that I really believe in it.”
“Dukes are not so bad, after all.” Lucy looked fondly at Ashmore, who was walking with the baby in the rose garden.
“Yes. But not for me,” Arabella muttered to herself.
Lucy didn’t hear her. “We could visit Miss Hilversham after we return from London.”
“That’s a fabulous idea, Lucy.”
“Wonderful. I’ll tell Mrs Bates of our plans.” Lucy left.
Arabella looked around furtively to check whether no one was around. Then she quickly tore out a small section of the newspaper and tucked it into her bodice. She folded up the remaining newspaper and gave to a footman, with the instructions to have it burned.
