Chapter 1

Marci

It's my lunch break, and even though I work from home, I make it a point to take time to eat my meal and then relax for an hour afterward. I do medical transcription and am really happy with how it fits into my lifestyle.

The one thing missing, though, is having a connection with someone—a deep, intimate connection with the man who is the right one for me.

I put down the book I'm reading, a romance with a silver fox. My mind immediately goes to a certain someone I see often in town. I've tried reaching out to him, but I start babbling whenever I run into him. Nothing coherent comes out of my mouth, then I turn beet red and run away as fast as possible.

There's a ding from my phone, and I check to see who it is.

Sasha: 911

I pick up the phone and quickly dial her. She answers after the first ring, and I can almost hear her happiness through the phone.

"What?” I ask. “What is all this squealing about? What's the emergency?"

"I'm finally going on a date with Brody."

"You mean the grumpy mountain man that you keep telling me about?"

"Yes!"

"Well, finally! I thought you'd never ask him out on a date."

"It wasn't like that,” she said. “His friend sort of set us up, but I'm so grateful to her."

"What's the emergency?"

"I don't know what to wear."

I burst into laughter because only my sunny friend Sasha would consider fashion an emergency.

"This is a serious problem, Marci."

"I know, I know. I'm sorry."

We talk on the phone for a while, and she sends me images of the outfits she's thinking of wearing for her date. But soon the conversation changes. I should have known Sasha would not miss an opportunity to sniff around my love life. I certainly never miss one with hers.

"Have you tried talking to the silver fox lately?"

"I don't know if I should. It's only been six months since I was able to dump that idiot Carl."

"Has he been bothering you?"

"He's been quiet for the past few months."

"But you're not convinced he's out of the picture?" Sasha’s frown came through the phone.

"No, he seemed almost obsessed with me. It's scary, and I'm spooked every time there's a weird noise outside."

"Having someone around would help ease those fears."

"I just can't seem to utter normal words when I'm in front of him. He's so delicious to look at."

"You want to know what I think?"

I hold my breath and let it out. "What?"
