Mason stepped forward, and I rested my hand against my bump and stepped back, not in fear but in caution. Mason was a fucking psychopath who’d do everything he could to protect his money and his reputation.
He slammed his hands into Cam’s chest, pushing him back. Cam stumbled back a few feet, almost into me, and I grabbed his bicep to keep him from fighting Mason. I didn’t need that right now.
“Cam, stop, please,” I whispered.
Cam looked over at me, brows furrowed together, and then he shook his head and stepped farther away from Mason, hands raised to show that he didn’t want to fight. I knew that Cam could knock Mason’s head off though; he was a lot bigger than Mason, which was why I wanted him in front of me and not fighting him and leaving me vulnerable for one of his stupid fucking girls to pick on and torment me.
“So what, Mia?” Mason asked, scowling. “Spreading lies about me now? Jumping from Michael to this asshole?” He looked around at everyone. “You’re going to believe a slut like her?”
“We’re not dating,” I said to him. “Not like that’s any of your business.”
Chelsea stepped forward, curling her fingers around Mason’s bicep, as if she was claiming him. “You two should leave. Mason is my guest. If you don’t like it, there’s the door.”
I stared at him, then at her. Then, I pulled Cam to the door to get the fuck out of here. Glad I had come to see how utterly blind and careless some of the people in the psych department were. But part of me was feeling a bit wary. Why is Mason here in the first place? He’d never hung out with any of the psych undergrads or grads before. Was he hooking up with one to try to get me jealous, to see me again? The thought didn’t sit easy with me.
“I’m going to follow you home,” Cam said. “I don’t trust that asshole.”
And because I didn’t trust Mason either, I nodded. In times like this, I would usually wait for Michael, but I wanted to get out of here before something happened. All I could think about was protecting me and my pregnant belly from the monster of my nightmares.
As soon asI drove up the driveway, Michael opened the front door, jaw tight. I prayed to whoever it was watching down on us that Michael wasn’t going to start something. I didn’t think he would, but last time I’d mentioned Cam, he’d seemed a bit jealous. Bringing Cam home was definitely not what I’d wanted to do, but it also wasn’t the worst idea. Mason was crazy.
I got out of the car, looking down the driveway to make sure Mason hadn’t followed us.
“I didn’t see any cars,” Cam said, stepping out of his car. His gaze traveled to Michael, who was walking down the steps for me, hands stuffed in his pockets.
“Do you need help, Mia?” Michael asked, eyes on Cam.
I pulled my purse from the passenger side and cursed under my breath as they stared at each other. I didn’t know what the fuck was happening. I wanted to go inside and forget about tonight.Fuck Mason forstillruining everything.
To break the awkward tension, Cam stuck out his hand. “Cam. Cam Hodges.”
Michael shook his hand a little too firmly. “Michael Bryne, Mia’s fiancé.”
I placed my hand on Michael’s bicep and pulled him back. “Cam came back with me because Mason was at the party and I didn’t feel comfortable leaving alone,” I said.
“Mason was at the party?” Michael repeated. “I thought you said it was psych grads only.”
“It was supposed to be,” Cam said. “Everyone else there was in the program.” Michael turned to Cam, and Cam held up his hands. “Hey, I hate Mason almost as much as you probably do. He’s been a dick to me since freshman year.”
Michael looked at him, then back at me. “We can talk about this inside.”
I nodded and watched him walk back to the front door.
Cam awkwardly stuffed his hands into his pockets. “I didn’t know you had a fiancé,” he said.
I waved my left hand with my engagement ring at him and smiled. “It kind of happened suddenly with us, getting married and having babies, but he’s amazing.”
While Cam grinned, I didn’t miss the way his lips twitched down for the slightest moment.
He crossed his arms over his chest and leaned forward. “I’m happy for you. You deserve to be happy after that shithead.”
CHAPTER10
MIA
Michael hadn’t said much about Cam last night. I reassured him that he was a friend, but I could still see that he was a bit annoyed, maybe upset. Whatever it was, he’d seemed to get over it quite quickly, bringing me up to the bedroom, locking me inside, and coming over and over inside me, as if he was claiming my body.
I sucked on my bottom lip, daydreaming about Michael fucking me again as we tried a bunch of different flavors of cake with the wedding planner, Hailey.
