I gave him a soliddefinitely notstare, to which he responded with a chuckle.
“Okay, Harrison is out.”
“Mia,” a nurse said, walking out one of the many doors.
Michael and I stood and followed her to the back room. My stomach was in knots as I went back and forth between a girl and a boy. Mom had told me that she knew for certain I was having a girl because I had been craving oranges, but I wasn’t too sure about that.
At least, I was hoping there was a chance of it being a boy for Michael.
After the nurse got me situated on the bed and set up her machine and computer, she looked over at us.
“Do you want to know what you’re having?” the doctor asked, smiling widely at Michael and me as she spread cold gel all over my stomach.
I glanced up at Michael, who raised his brows at me, giving me permission to do whatever I wanted.
Nodding eagerly up at her, I lay back on the bed. “Yes, please, we want to know.”
After a few moments of setup, her monitor brightened, and we could see the ultrasound of the baby. She furrowed her brows for a moment, and then smiled.
“Ooh, so exciting! Congrats, you two. It’s a boy,” she said, pointing to the screen to show us.
My eyes lit up, and I intertwined my fingers with Michael’s and squeezed tightly.A boy? We are having a boy.A bunch of new names raced through my head that we had picked out the other day because I wasn’t one hundred percent set on naming our boy Easton yet.
Michael squeezed my shoulder and kissed me on the cheek, whispering into my ear about how excited he was for us. The doctor continued to point out the baby but paused mid-sentence. A look that I couldn’t quite comprehend crossed her face.
“What’s this?” she asked in a breathy whisper.
I gulped and sat up almost instinctively. “What is it?” I asked, thinking the worst. “What’s going on?”
CHAPTER6
MIA
“Oh dear,” the doctor said, staring at the monitor with wide eyes. She pulled out her stethoscope and placed it on my stomach, brows furrowed together. “I don’t know how we missed this before.”
My eyes widened, and I squeezed Michael’s hand tighter.
“What’s going on?” I asked, unable to deal with all the suspense. My heart raced in my chest, and I sucked on the inside of my cheek. “What’s happening?”
It felt like the entire world slowed down, and all I could think about was the worst.Has something happened to the baby? Is my IUD still inside of me? Is the baby not breathing? What the hell is it?
The doctor tore off her stethoscope and placed it back around her neck. “Well …” she said, pausing. She sat back on her chair and pointed to the monitor. “Mia and Michael, it looks like you’re having two boys.”
My jaw dropped, and I sucked in a deep breath, glancing back over at Michael.
What the hell does she mean, we are having two boys?! I didn’t even know if I could raise one, never mind two of them.
“Twins?” I asked breathlessly.
Michael glanced over at me and squeezed my knee, as if to tell me to calm down and that everything would be all right. But he had been through raising a kid before. This was my first, and now, I had to push two big heads out of my vagina?!
The doctor cleared her throat. “Actually, two boys and a girl.”
I sat up, feeling like my eyes were about to pop out of my head. “You’re kidding me.”
I stared at her in disbelief and shook my head. This couldn’t be true. She had to be lying. There couldn’t be three babies inside of me.
“Triplets,” the doctor said, pointing to the screen and showing us all three.
