Chapter 26
Matthew 10:16 “I am sending you out like sheep among wolves. Therefore be as shrewd as snakes and as innocent as doves.”
Gwen
Despite my best efforts to hide the scratches on my bare feet, Axel notices and groans. “Sweetheart, why didn’t you say anything?”
To be honest, my primary focus had been on escaping the compound. Now, I wish like hell I had thought to don my shoes before the corkscrew incident.
“No more walking. Climb on my back.” After my alpha hands his knapsack to Lucky, he squats so I can jump aboard.
As I wrap my legs around Axel’s waist, Slate catches my husband’s eye passing an unsaid meaning. “Ready?”
“Let’s do this.” The wolf’s quick pace forces me to clutch onto him which causes his body armor to rub against my breasts and in between my spread thighs.
Recalling how he risked his life to free me, I allow my pleasure center to grow. The day we married, I thought I could not love him more. After he adopted Abbie, my feelings doubled. As he carries me out of harm’s way, all I want to do is take him to bed and show him what he means to me.
After a weirdly inappropriate orgasm, my thoughts wander to the scientists we left behind, especially Ghost. I’m still not sure why he locked me up. Was he trying to protect me or prevent my rescue? Perhaps I’ll never know.
Our government should steal them from the compound and hire them all. We have much to learn before we can stop these bad actors from intercepting our satellite’s GPS signals.
In the middle of the pine forest, the grim-faced team stops. When I slide off Axel’s back, he turns. His warlike eyes face me and soften the moment his lips brush over mine.
“We’ll be safe before you know it.” He’s not telling me something.
“What’s wrong?” Surely, by now, he knows better than to coddle me.
“The Belarusians have placed elite guards at the tunnel we used to cross the border. We need to find another way out.”
To me, the answer is obvious. “Ledbetter’s jet is still on his runway. Isn’t one of you guys a pilot?”
A bird squawks, guns lift, and as we duck, Hunt disappears into the forest.
Eyes darting about, Slate grunts. “Doesn’t matter. They will shoot us down the minute we take off.”
Again, they underestimate me. “What if the whole world thought we took off from Lithuania?”
The Patten man whistles through his teeth. “They wouldn’t dare shoot at us. NATO would be forced to respond. Can you do that?”
“Mmm-hmm.” Hoping I didn’t dream up specifications during my nap, I reach out for Trever’s tablet and access my cloud space.
If my beta code works remotely, I'll be able to fool the enemy long enough to enter friendly skies.
“It’s not going to be easy to double back.” While Slate and the rest huddle around a map, Hunter returns.
In army fatigues instead of his usual suit and tie, the Fed moves with the deadly ease of a jungle cat. “All clear. We should head out.”
“Copy that.” Axel bends forward so I can retake my position, but I shake my head no.
“I need shoes. You’re not carrying me the whole way.”
My husband starts to argue, then reconsiders. Using a knife, he cuts out his boots’ inserts, sticks them inside his socks, then ties them to my feet with spare shoelaces. While not Converses, the leather will protect my feet well enough to keep moving.
As I practice walking, excited dogs bark in the distance, and the whole team pales.
“To me.” Suds motions to his SEAL pals, and as the three disappear, my wolfman grabs my arm, and we run.
“Do not stop for anything.” His face shows no fear, but it doesn’t take a genius to know we’re up shit’s creek.
