I ain’t washing your clothes, not making your bed, not makin’ your supper.
I ain’t being your fool, not warming your sheets, not pouring you a cuppa.
Your favorite whiskey’s swirling down the drain.
Baby, I’m fed up and gonna cause you pain.
I’m gonna electrify you.
Your gonna stand there and stare
I’m gonna freeze you in place
Come get me if you dare.
I’m done being your maid, done bein’ your ball and chain
The thunder is a comin’ and it’s just started to rain…
“That’s the gist.” She rolls her eyes. “It’s not about Cal, you guys. Jeesh. I had Peter in mind when I wrote it… Hell. You might as well send me to the chair.”
Suds paces and shoots his eyes toward the door. “How about us three take a walk and let the ladies relax for a few?”
Sienna smiles at her husband and smacks him on the lips as he rises. “Go ahead, sweetheart. I know you need to strategize and don’t want me to hear. It’s fine. Really. Go.”
Once they leave the room, she sticks fingers and thumbs into the mugs to bring them to the sink. “How bad is it, Sam? Be honest.”
She waits at the dishwasher while I open the door. “It’s all circumstantial and you have the best lawyer there is.”
“But I look guilty?”
“Don’t fret. We still have time to figure it out.”
“I am so glad they left. I need to tell you something.” After loading the top shelf, she sits and I follow suit. I sure hope she’s not going to say she was cheating on her husband because that would suck big time.”
“I’m pregnant.”
Shut the front door. That is so not what I expected her to say. When I get my wits about me, I hug her tight. “Awesome. Congratulations.”
“Thanks. I just found out. In fact, I did the test at your apartment but didn’t tell anyone. I don’t want my family to worry more than they already do.”
Her admission brings my fiancé’s strange behavior front and center. “You didn’t, by any chance, leave your used stick in my trash?”
“I guess so… Why? Do you think Suds told my husband?” Her eyes widen as I bang my palm to my forehead repeatedly.
“No wonder he’s been acting all kinds of weird. Now, it all makes sense.”
Understanding registers on her face as the light bulb goes off. “Wait. Suds thinks the stick was yours? Why the hell didn’t he ask you?”
“Why do men do anything? I have no idea.” I remember all our strange conversations and moan.
Sienna grabs my hand before I give myself a concussion. “I am so, so sorry. I was so freaked out, I never even considered Suds would-”
“Actually, it’s a relief. I’ll set him straight but you need to tell Andy.”
“Not until we figure out who killed Cal. Promise me, Sam.” She eyes me so intently, I nod, even though I think it’s a bad idea.
I picture her onstage the other night with a baby bump. “Wow. How are babies going to jive with your career and all?”
