At the hospital desk, we learn she’s still in the ER. In order to see her, we have to insist we’re her brothers.

Suds hangs back at the curtain where she rests. “Go ahead. I’ll give you two a few.”

“Hey.” Her eyes open and she smiles.

“How’s the feet?”

She pulls up on the blankets, revealing red skin and blisters. “Sore, but no permanent damage. They say I can go home as soon as the doctor gives his okay.”

“You want me to call your mom for you?”

“My God, no.” Horrified, her face skews.

She reaches forth her hands to me, I take them, and she pulls me into a heated kiss.

When we come up for air, she touches my cheek. “Thank you.”

Clearing my throat, I swallow hard, and stare into her eyes, wet with tears. How do I tell her what went through my mind the split second when I thought I lost her? Is it too soon to tell her she’s my fookin’ everything?

I can’t find the words.

“You’re welcome.”
