“What happened?” More brain cells start to engage, my heartrate jumps, and I glance around the backseat.

Yuri’s to my left, Gerard ‘s to my right, and two enormous gorillas with black caps sit in the front.

The asshole that used to be my friend says, “Yuri saved you from the gunmen.”

Funny. I distinctly remember him punching me in the face.To make sure, I bring my hand to my cheek, blinding pain my reward.

Maybe it’s best to play stupid.

I turn to the Russian. “Thanks.”For nothing.

Gerard grabs my arm, tugs me to sit upright, and gives me a shake. “Callie, this is important. Yuri needs the rest of your work.”

“The rest?” This has to be a nightmare. Soon I’ll wake up and laugh about how weird it was. “I really don’t know what you mean.”

I cringe when Yuri speaks, his voice scraping like nails on a blackboard. “Stop with the innocent act. You’ve figured out how to make EMF much deadlier, eh?”

“Honestly, no, I haven’t.”Oh shit, how could he possibly know.

“That’s not the answer I want to hear.” He points a gun at Gerard’s temple who turns a ghastly shade of green.

“Tell him the truth, Callie.”

I need a diversion, a way to give Lochlan time to find me, but my brain’s not firing on all cylinders. “O-okay, b-but... I need my notes. Yes. And some equipment.”

From the way Yuri purses his lips, I don’t think he believes me. My acting skills need to improve right now or I die.

Better than that, I’ll tell him the truth. “Listen, you’re right. In theory, I know how to make a light-weight EMF weapon but to prove it, I’ll need my lab.”

The arms dealer nods, I let out a huge sigh, and Gerard sinks back into the seat.

What in God’s name have I gotten myself into?
