Chapter 14
Lucky
After the alarm installation is finished, Suds and I toss a coin and he loses. So, today, he braves the cold while I monitor Callie from the warmth of my hotel room. However, after seeing what happened with her professor, I almost change places. I can only imagine the hurt she’s going through and want to be there for her.
I’m not proud of it, but the best part of my day was when the Ruski-poser kissed her. I laughed when she turned green and I thought she might puke. If only my girl would follow her heart, she’d be so much happier. Just kick the naysayers to the curb. Then, she’ll realize I’m the bloke for her.
Suddenly, my monitor blinks, the feed from her apartment pops up, and an outside camera focuses on her apartment door.
What the fuck? She gave that twat Gerard, a key? And her alarm code? I’ll give her a stern talking to but he needs to learn to respect her privacy.
Now, some people might say he’s got just as much right to her apartment as me but not so. I got a bloomin’ contract and he’s got jack shit.
Ready to bash some sense into his pea-sized brain, I rush out my door, pausing only to button my coat in the elevator.
Ten minutes later, I’m in her kitchen with Chase looking guilty as sin and the cat hissing at us both.
“What the bloody hell are you doing in her apartment?” I glare at the cat and it has the good sense to run and hide, which is more than I can say for Chase.
I’m almost twice his size and yet he thrusts a key chain in front of my face. “Her mother gave me a key. What’s your excuse, mate?”
“I’m her bodyguard.” I step into his personal space.
“Says who?” He turns his back to me, faces the kitchen table, and pulls a peanut butter jar from a canvas bag.
“Her mum.”
“Funny. Hermotheraskedmeto watch out for her.” Pushing me aside, he opens her refrigerator and puts away the bag of groceries.
Face to face, I hold the door when he tries to close it. “It doesn’t matter. You need to ask Callie’s permission first.”
“Did you?”
“Ahem?” The subject of our conversation fumes from her open apartment door. “What the hell are you two doing here?”
Gerard kisses her on the cheek and points to the open refrigerator door. “I went to the store for you, darling.”
Darling? It’s damn heroic how I stop myself from gagging. What a fookin’ manipulative, arrogant twit.
“And you?” Callie tap-taps her boots on the floor tile.
With my gaze locked on her, I toss my head at the wanker. “Your alarm went off because he put in the wrong code. I came to see who was breaking in.”
The fuckwit glares, knowing full well he put in the right code but he’s smart enough to shut his trap.
My future wife shakes her head back and forth, removes her pink scarf, and sighs heavily. “Listen, both of you, I’ve had a really shitty day. Gerry? My mother had no right to give you my key and code. And even if she did, you should know better. Thank you for groceries but you need to get the fuck out.”
Goodonya, luv.
“You’re lettinghimstay?” Chase pokes me in the chest with an index finger.
“That, is none of your business.” If blue eyes were laser beams, he’d have two small circular holes through his skull but he just doesn’t know when to shut up.
“I bet your bodyguard, here, never made it through high school. What are your ambitions, mate? To work your way up to chief meathead for Grayson Securities?”
“I think the little lady asked you to go.”
I grab him by the collar, pull his nose to mine but the little weasel just smiles, turns to Callie, and says, “Explain our situation.”
