My eyes water and I wipe them quickly with the back of my hand. I’m a grown woman, for heaven’s sakes. Our connection was the result of survival of the fittest, going back to the origin of time. A female spies an alpha male, they inhale each other’s pheromones, and mate.
Why then, do I feel so miserable at the thought of never seeing him again.
Say something, Calliope Jane Bradford-Clarke.
We arrive at the bank and he jumps out and opens the door. His eyes meet mine and he gives me a wink. Then, he steadies me on the icy pavement and behind Suds, walks me to the front door.
“Lochlan, I want to ask–”
Suds opens the door and the bank manager smiles. “Calliope? Gentlemen? Would you like to go right down or can I get you some coffee?”
“Thank you, but no.” Suds walks toward the elevator. “We have a long drive ahead of us.”
“And I need to study.” I add my two cents, not wanting to appear desperate.
“That’s right, you’re almost a doctor, right?”
I smile. “That’s the plan.”
In the elevator, I study the two men who took me in without question last night when they thought I was in danger. Once we’re downstairs, Suds and I put the earrings back in the box, then we’re bundling up.
When they leave me off at the college steps, Lucky opens the door for me, and with a brave heart, I hug him tight. “I’ll never forget you.”
His dark eyes search my face as if trying to find something there then his lips crash down on mine. The public show of affection catches me off guard and my knees go weak but his arms are there at my back, steadying me and holding me to him.
“This isn’t over, luv.”
