I reach up and trace his smile with my fingertip. “I love you.”
“I love you, too.”
He lays on his side with an ear on his bicep. His hand caresses up and down my side. “When do you want the wedding?”
“We’re already married.”
“That doesn’t count. We need a huge party, friends, a DJ and a beautiful white gown.”
“It costs a fair amount of money. Shouldn’t we be saving for the baby?” As much as I always wanted a beautiful wedding, I need to be practical.
He laughs. “Did I ever mention I had free room and board while I was watching out for CJ and his family?”
“I don’t think so. Did you save everything?” I giggle when he tickles a spot under my arm and slap his hand away.
Chuckling, he pulls me into his chest. “Hell no. I had his brother invest it for me. He made CJ a millionaire. I figured he could get me close.”
“I may have a few bucks stashed away as well. But where will we live?”
“Your apartment, for now, if you want.”
“When are you done with the Senator.” A wave of sadness washes over me when I think of another ten days without him.
He senses it too and frowns for the first time this evening. “I don’t know, babe. But don’t worry. I’ll be back before you know it. Okay?”
“Sure. I can start a list of guests. Do you have any family you want to invite?”
“All I got is my mother, out west. I’m not sure if she’ll come.”
I remember what he told me about her and get a little thoughtful. “What was it like, growing up?”
“Analyzing me, doc?”
“Nope, just asking.”
He sighs and looks up at the ceiling. “We didn’t stay anyplace more than a few months. She’d skip out on her bills and run out in the middle of the night. She told the authorities I was home-schooled but mostly, I taught myself. I think I took care of her more than the other way around.”
“But you want me to invite her?”
“I guess. Just don’t expect much.” He hands me his phone, “Most of my buddies are in here. They’re my family. There’s Grayson, Slate, and the Quinns.”
“Soon, we’ll be a family.” I put his large hand over my belly.
His eyes come to mine, dark again with passion, and we make love.
