“Nope. We’re here, and we owe that douchebag some payback over him throwing you to the wolves.”

I grimaced. “Titania held them all in sway, Moira. Maybe we should?—”

“I’m with Moira,” Tess said. “Titania’s powers were suggestive. If Thorvin wasn’t already on the fence about what to do, he never would have allowed what happened.”

Moira blinked owlishly. “Tess on my side? Will wonders never cease?”

I stared at the banshee, feeling oddly empty. “I don’t know Thorvin, but knowing that hurts more than I thought it would.”

“Good,” Moira said. “You ready?”

In the distance, Garrett crept through the landscape, slowly making his way back to us.

I squared my shoulders. “Yup. Let’s do it.”

The shifter gestured for us to follow. We crept back to the edge of the woods.

“Cameras everywhere and two sentries patrolling.”

“Child’s play,” Moira said.

He gave her a quelling look. “I can’t be caught prowling any closer to the property without causing problems for Caelan.” He pointed toward the front door. “Come in from the east and stop right behind that maple.”

I spotted the maple in question.

“Does your magic work long distance?”

Moira grimaced. “Not as well as Evie’s, but I can do a few things.”

Color me curious. Moira rarely used much magic around the shop and played coy when I asked questions about what she could do. But lately, I was catching the odd…resonance from Moira, a hint of power I’d never sensed before. The magic was intermittent, and sometimes I thought I’d imagined the feeling, but I’d brought it up once and Moira shut my questions down immediately.

Something was going on.

Tonight I might find out what it was.

Garrett eyed her. “Vampires are good at blending in. Can you get closer without catching the camera’s eye?”

A slow smile curved her lips. “I intend to find out.”

Garrett’s answering smile made me very nervous.

Tess’s form went transparent. “What do you want me to do?”

“Keep an eye out for the sentries,” Garrett said before Moira could speak. “You won’t show up on the camera very well as long as you stay in that form.”

“Good idea,” I said. “I’ll investigate the wisteria roots.”

“Wait until the last minute before you trigger any disasters,” Moira whispered. “I’ll be back in a few minutes.”

With a wink she was gone.

MOIRA

Irarely used my vampiric powers. In a town like Joy Springs, there was little need. Evie got into enough trouble for both of us, and she always managed to get herself out without my help. Now was my chance to sow a little chaos into the world as payback for what he’d done to Evie.
