I knew I couldn’t do that. I was in charge now; I was to handle everything perhaps until I died.

But for at least tonight, for at least as long as Leigh lay naked in front of me, that could wait. It would not wait forever, but it would wait just long enough.

“Oh, fuck,” Leigh said. “That was something else.”

I gave a short laugh in response, followed by a barely audible “yeah,” but it started to hit me.

That really wassomething else.

It wasn’t normal. And I didn’t mean just the physical chemistry and the connection. The feelings that I’d felt before I got into the moment physically came rushing back. The emotional connection, the intensity of it…

It was a dangerous game.

But it was one that I was starting to understand as far as why my father had played it. Why Spawn had played it.

And now, by all accounts, I was going to play it, consequences be damned.

Because the consequences of not playing the game were, somehow, too painful to imagine.
