That was the problem. I couldn’t quite pin what wasn’t to like, but there was something off. We were talking at a level that wasn’t akin to how we really felt about each other, at least not for me. I was talking to her like she was a club bunny and she was talking to me like I was her weekend booty call, but at least for how I felt, that wasn’t enough.

“I mean, it all sounds great to me,” I said. “Give me your phone and I’ll put my number in it. Save it as Sonny for Sex.”

“Jesus,” Leigh said, but she laughed through her bites of food. “Whenever?”

“Well, put it this way, if you’d woken up ten minutes earlier, I’d be inside you upstairs in the shower right now, and—what?”

Her face had turned red, a guilty smile crossing over it like she was hiding something.

“I…I was going to just wait until you left the room and get dressed to leave, but then I heard you cooking and I thought, eh, why not? So I was actually awake when you were doing all that. I just felt…”

Afraid to do anything because you were afraid I’d say no, that I’d reject you for some reason.

“You sure it’s too late?” I said.

“Unless you can come in a minute without getting messy, then yes.”

“Damn,” I said as I snapped my fingers, though even just that opportunity seemed like one worth taking. “Well, fair enough. You can call me whenever you want me, and if I’m around, I’ll hop by.”

“What, you’re not going to call me?” Leigh said as she finished her biscuit.

“Probably not for a bit, not with club shit going on.”

But that was a little bit of posturing. If she went long enough without calling me, I was fucking calling her. I didn’t want club bunny sex anymore after last night, or at least not nearly as bad as I wanted to take Leigh for myself.

“Don’t tell me you’re going to make me wait,” she said with a wry smile on her face.

“Then just call me tonight,” I said, “but for real, things are getting a bit tough at the club. Hailey and Melissa will tell you that, I’m sure. I’m not going to say anything more, but don’t think it’s that easy.”

I finished my eggs quickly, put my fork down, and smiled.

“We gotta get you back to your car, though. If, you know, you’re into the whole being a working woman thing.”

“Gotta pay the bills somehow,” Leigh said with a sad sigh. “I didn’t drive downtown, but I’ll take a ride back to my place.”

I went past her, squeezed her shoulder, and headed upstairs. I lingered in my bedroom for a few minutes, wondering if I’d get Leigh to come in for a quickie. After a conversation like that, why the hell not?

But more than that, I wasn’t just feeling aroused. I was feeling…caring for her. Concerned for her. I didn’t want her to have to go back to work. I didn’t want her to have to deal with a shitty boss or anything else that her life seemed to have out for her.

What the fuck was going on with me? I’d never let great sex lead to complicated feelings. What the fuck?

Maybe I didn’t need to be trying to hope she’d come up for a quickie. Maybe I shouldn’t be having sex at all with her, not if this was how I was going to react.

I finished getting dressed and went downstairs. Leigh, perhaps onto my game, brushed past me and got her clothes on. I led her outside, revved the bike to life, and followed her directions to her place, a nice apartment complex not too far from where my father lived.

She hopped off, smiled at me, and gave me a passionate kiss—well, as passionate as one could get this early in the morning.

“I’ll see you around, Sonny,” she said.

I smiled and winked back at her. I didn’t want to say anything and tie myself to her, even though I knew if she reached out to me, I wouldn’t say no.

I needed to at least have the ability, though. This was a terrible sign if I was having trouble resisting her now. For as much shit as I’d given my father and Spawn for falling in love at the worst possible time, it now seemed quite evident that fighting that was all but impossible.

I just really hoped it didn’t interfere with my duties at the club too much. But I knew all too well from seeing what happened to the other two that not only was it possible, it was probable.

So the question was now, what would be the price to pay?
