“What the hell do you want?” I said, fearful he was going to try and rape her.
“Oh, don’t worry. I’m not moving from this seat. She’ll come here.”
I glared at the man, but he seemed completely at ease. He didn’t make a move to attack me or try and intimidate me. He made himself so much at home, it was as if he also lived here and was just stopping by for a snack before heading out.
Meanwhile, I could hear Hailey hurrying to get dressed. She moved like she knew there was a problem. And sure enough, she came out with a scowl on her face—that quickly morphed into fear and a gulp.
“King?”
“King?” I said back, wondering who the hell Hailey knew that went by “King.”
“Have a seat,” he said. “You two have absolutely nothing to worry about. I don’t even have a gun or a weapon. Look.”
He stood up and patted himself down, revealing nothing unusual under his suit or his pants. There was no way this man could be so at ease and Hailey be so unsettled without there being something missing. Had he robbed Hailey last night and left a gun here? Was whoever had shut the door outside carrying a weapon and prepared to use it as needed?
“Who the hell are you?” I said. “And what are you doing with my sister and me?”
King, Mr. Roberts, whatever the fuck his name was, chuckled. He seemed genuinely amused by my question, which only pissed me off more.
“As I said, my name is King. I have heard that you want security and comfort? Well, I’m happy to say I can provide that.”
“The hell you talking about?” I said.
“Certainly, you don’t want to pin all your hopes and expectations for happiness on your sister, do you, Melissa?”
I looked to Hailey. Was this some sort of sick intervention? King just laughed.
“You didn’t think that I wouldn’t have a way of spying upon the significant others of two of the most important Devil’s Patriots, do you?”
Oh, what the hell…
“You two are far too important for me not to keep an eye on you. Even when you’re just resting at home.”
He’s spying on us here? How the fuck…
This moment left me really wishing Corey was here. I didn’t care about unresolved feelings or situations I needed to figure out. I just wanted his security, his primal side, his angry side to come out and defend us.
“Sit down and let’s chat,” King said.
“Fuck you,” Hailey said. “Satan’s going to kill you when he finds you.”
King smiled.
“Is he?” King said. “I guess we’ll find out soon enough.”
“What does that…”
But I already knew what it meant.
“I’ve told them we’re here,” King said. “I can only hope that they arrive in due haste.”
