“So far, so good. We’re on alert for any sighting of the King’s Men.”

“I see. And who put you up to watching?”

“Spawn did, sir; he’s right inside.”

I nodded. King knew his shit. These guys were good. I needed to do something unusual.

“Can I see your IDs?”

“I’m…what?” the first one said.

I noticed the second one flexing his fingers around his pistol. It was probably an involuntary action, one that indicated he was preparing to do something. But it sent all of my alarms up.

“It’s an extra layer of security right now,” I said. “We’ve gotten reports about King’s Men impersonating Devil’s Patriots.”

“Sir, I know we’re just prospects, but—”

“You’re going to fucking argue with—”

It happened almost instantly.

The man furthest from me raised his gun to fire. In a swift reaction, I ducked my head behind the first guard, knocked him off balance by hitting him right in the lower spine, and used him as a shield. I grabbed my gun, shot the second guy right in the fucking forehead, and then shot the first guy in the back of the skull.

The Devil’s Patriots—the real ones—hurried outside.

“Fuckers impersonating us now,” I said. “Who the hell was supposed to be standing guard?”

“No one,” Sonny said. “We kept us inside. These guys literally would have walked up in the last couple of minutes.”

Fuck. That means…

“Get back inside, prepare for battle.”

I hurried over to Hailey’s car.

“You need to come with me.”

“But—”

“King’s about to launch an attack on the club.”

She still stared at me with doubt.

“Look, you gave me good info today; I’ll fuck your brains out in thanks. For right now—”

The sound of motorcycles approaching filled the air.

“Now, Hailey!”

She was smiling but acted quickly. Maybe I’d do more than give her a good fuck. Maybe, even a second—

No, there was no time to think about that. She got out of the car, ran over to me, and took cover behind me. The two of us got inside the clubhouse and its now-bulletproof front door right as a motorcyclist drove by and laid down fire on the clubhouse.

“Motherfuck!” I yelled. “Hailey, go down that hall, take the furthest door down. It’ll be the safest place.”

She nodded and sprinted down. She was safe now. I could focus on the second part of the task at hand.

“How’s it looking out there?”
