“I believe you, but just to tell you right now, do not ever drag me into club business in any fashion,” I said. “I don’t care what it is or how nice it is. I am asking you, Zack, out, not you, Zack the Black Reapers. Understood?”

Zack nodded.

“But regardless of how you feel, I am going out of town this weekend, so let’s do next week.”

“Deal,” I said.

“Deal,” Zack said. “I’m sure I’ll see you at the hospital again soon enough.”

And once again, seemingly without warning, seemingly deliberately cutting it off short, he left. He did not come back for my phone number, for what days I’d be here, or anything that could have helped him solidify his plans. He just walked away with the certainty that he could get me again at his own convenience.

And damnit, I hated that that was so damn attractive.

I was probably putting myself in a spot to get hurt all over again. Why even pretend like it was anything else? But on the other hand, maybe I was smarter now. Maybe it wasn’t so much putting myself in a spot to get hurt as it was a spot with better odds for me.

I just really hoped he got the point that I wanted no Black Reaper talk between us.

It would turn me off faster than him demanding sex on the first date.
