I headed back to the hospital room and peered inside. Justine did not see me yet. She looked as beautiful doing her job as she had the morning after.

It really made me wonder just how she had wound up at our house all that time ago. Someone like her didn’t cross paths with people like us. I knew she was close friends with the Rogers girls, but still.

She looked up and saw me.

Our eyes locked, and I felt a warm pit in my stomach. What the fuck was that?

No one ever made me feel that. No one ever got me nervous. Maybe when I was thirteen and discovering sex for the first time, but not now. But those eyes…that gaze…

She finally moved, but by that point, it was evident Brock had made a good decision. She came out of the room with a similar expression from all those months ago—annoyed and frustrated to be speaking to one of us, but not quite able to hide how she felt about me.

“I thought I told you all to leave.”

“And I can,” I said. “But I have to know. How is Cole?”
