Jesus Christ. This bitch is going to get herself killed. She’s truly fucking crazy.

Or she’s truly brave and knows what she’s capable of.

What a woman.

“You’re insane,” I said, but I spoke with admiration. “Just try not to get yourself killed before we figure it out.”

“No promises,” Katie said.

And for the first time since I walked in that store, Katie smiled at me.

“You know, you don’t suck as much when you realize that I’m a woman who can handle herself,” she said. “Maybe if you realize that the Bandits going psycho doesn’t scare me, you’ll realize you were fucking stupid for sending that text.”

What did I say to that? Was Katie giving me a second chance?

This wasn’t the time and place for that. It was surprising, sure, but it wasn’t something that needed my attention. It could wait until later.

“Cool,” I said.

It was all I added as I went back outside and headed to my bike. I could only hope that the next time I came by this store, Katie hadn’t gotten herself shot in an act of petulant rage against one of the most dangerous men I knew.
