He dropped to one knee.
“The perfect life. Hannah Jett, will you marry me?”
I put my hands over my face, started losing control of myself, and bawled. And then I said yes.
I said yes over and over and over again. Because my family had not only grown from two to three; it had now doubled, all in the span of a week.
Garrett got up, beaming, swept me up in a kiss that felt like it lasted a lifetime, and squeezed me tight as tears fell down from my cheeks.
“Oh, Hannah.”
“Garrett…”
We kissed again. We kissed for a long, long time. And I was in no fucking rush. I liked kissing this man. My…fiancé.
Wow.
“You eavesdropped on me, didn’t you?”
“Guilty as charged?” Garrett said with a look that was not apologetic in the slightest. “I figured the first night of you putting Little Chuckie to bed would get you to say something wonderful. And sure enough.”
“And sure enough.”
And guess what we did next? We kissed some more.
“But how—”
“Oh, getting everything set up? Mason did that,” Garrett said. “Or I should say, Mason helped with that. He will never admit to it because I don’t think he wants anyone to know what he did for me, but he did it.”
“Wow,” I said. “So you two are—”
“Good,” he said. “We’re good. We’re not great, but we don’t need to be.”
I just laughed at the good fortune we had. I was engaged. I was a mother. The father of my son had made peace with my brother. Nine months ago, that would have seemed like a fantasy.
“The only shame about tonight,” Garrett said. “Is that you just gave birth. I’d bet sex right now would feel magical.”
“Also, Little Charlie is in the room,” I said with a smirk. “But…”
“But?”
“Now that we’re engaged and will eventually be married, we got a lifetime to do just that.”
“Indeed, we do.”
We didn’t just have a lifetime of sex.
We had a lifetime to create lasting memories. We had a lifetime to share our bond together. We had a lifetime to raise Charles into the best man he could be, to experience the greatest joys the world could give, and to find his own love someday.
But most of all, we had a lifetime to love.
“I love you, Hannah Jett,” Garrett said, pulling me in for another kiss.
Only when we caught our breath did I respond.
“And I love you, Garrett Marks.”
And then we kissed once more, and I had a feeling I was about to have a marriage that would never let me catch my breath.
