I rose, put a hand on his shoulder, struggled to find any words, and left without saying anything more. I got in my car, rolled down the window, looked at Steele, and was left wondering if his eyes were following me behind those sunglasses.
I drove off, looking in the rearview mirror as Garrett came back outside. At a red light, I pulled out my phone and texted Tara.
“Right about Steele. He’s not worth it.”
