Bodyguard my ass. Given that the Lowens have a high compatibility with the Nolans, I’m willing to bet the electric charge between them means something far beyond a professional relationship. But whatever, I’m not getting involved. I’m here for something that matters to me, something incredibly important.

"Okay…"

I walk in after Blue without asking anything, shaking off the whole situation. I even ignore the fact that Gabriel is twenty-one and Blue is forty-two. That is not my business.

I have no intention of judging him. The only thing I feel toward him is gratitude, because it amazes me that even though he is the CEO of the entire corporation, he has never handed this project over to anyone else. He still devotes his attention to my case, keeps a close eye on it.

I smile at him broadly.

"Maybe today?" I whisper. "Maybe this finally works."

"We’ll see," he says with a quick wink as he walks toward me with a tiny blood-collecting device.

Wow. Blue winking? Well, well. It seems like he’s in a good mood. He also looks wonderful, faintly flushed, with a sort of brightness in his whole posture, he even feels younger. Thanks to his expensive skin therapies he never looked older than twenty-six, but now he seems almost Gabriel’s age, his skin soft and glowing. Since his looks are almost twin-like to mine, it makes me feel a kind of fascination with his transformation, but again, I hold back from asking anything.

He comes closer, I offer my finger, and Blue collects a droplet of blood. I watch him walk over to the analysis machineand insert the tiny vial inside, where my blood will be mixed with Bay’s antigens.

Then he sits at a special microscope viewer and examines the effect.

I know it usually takes about ten to fifteen minutes, so I sit on the examination bed, nervously biting my lip. I stare at Blue, noticing the little things about him that are different from usual. He seems to drift off into thought from time to time, staring into space with his cheeks slightly flushed. What is he musing about?

"Your bodyguard is handsome," I say just to fill the silence. As expected, the small twitch in Blue’s expression tells me more than words.

"Is he?"

"Well, he’s a Nolan after all. They’re fine specimens. Even distant cousins."

Blue has his head lowered and shoots me a sharp sideways glance, but… he doesn’t answer.

Exactly then I get a text from Bay.

"Sorry darling, something urgent came up. I won’t be able to pick you up, can you please take an Uber?"

I sigh.

"Sure," I reply.

Interesting. Bay has never called me darling before. Maybe that means we really are crossing into the next stage.

Perhaps it’s even better he can’t pick me up. I’ll have time to get home, shower, change, and wait for him completely naked… I zone out for a moment.

Suddenly Blue turns toward me, his face stretched into a grin. He beckons me with a small curl of his finger and I jump up as if I have springs in my legs.

He steps aside and shows me the microscope viewer, but of course I have no idea what I’m looking at.

"No histamine reaction to this antigen, the cells are responding normally."

"Seriously?"

Blue nods.

"Are you sure?!"

"I am."

"Yippee yay!!!!" I yell, spinning like crazy, twirling around the room, dancing and almost losing my balance, and Blue watches all of it with a subtle smirk.

Then I stop. Hesitation returns.
