He nods. “Is that okay with you?”
“Yeah.”
The answer is barely audible.
“Come here,” he says, squeezing my hip.
I twist around and sit up, sighing when I see the look on his face. He threads his fingers through mine and brings me to my feet, and when I’m flush to his chest, he bends down to kiss me.
It’s a long, slow kiss that I feel everywhere. Eventually parting from his lips has my head spinning, my hands pressing to his chest just to stay upright. My lashes lift, eyes finding his, and I sigh at the way he’s looking at me.
“North said there was another spell. One that would make me like you,” I say.
Blaze’s jaw tenses. “There is. It’s a more intricate contract than the spell for tonight. It gives us the soul that makes you human. You would be frozen in this state. Forever looking as you do now, and you would be ours for eternity.”
“Jeez, way to sell it short,” I mutter, and Blaze smirks. “Would it make me a demon?”
“In a sense. You’d be immortal. Undying. You might be able to manipulate some things, but you wouldn’t have full powers like us. And nothing could sever you from us unless they somehow found a way to break the contract—which would have its own consequences.”
“Sounds complicated,” I say.
“It is.”
“And what if… What if I wanted that instead of just the hiding spell?” I ask.
Blaze groans and presses his forehead to mine. “You have no idea what that means to me, angel,” he breathes. “And you have no idea how much I wish I could.”
“Your powers,” I remember North mentioning.
“I don’t want to fuck something like that up. When we do that, it has to be so concise that nothing and no one can break it. No loopholes.”
My gaze casts to his chest as I take it all in. Just this morning, I was unsure of simply being hidden by them, and now, I’m asking him to make me a demon.
“Okay,” I say.
The front door opens then, and one bark from Pack announces North’s arrival.
“—girl, down girl. I missed you, too, lovely—Hello? Are you two fucking without me?” North shouts. “I have gifts.”
I squint at Blaze. “He has gifts?”
Blaze huffs amusedly and kisses my nose. “Birthday cake errand.”
“That’s where he’s been? Getting a cake? I thought he was putting up barriers.”
“He’s a good multitasker.”
I grab a pair of underwear from my bag and slip them on as Blaze joins North in the living room to discuss what’s left for them to do. I have two bags of clothes in the van already, along with all of Oreo and Pack’s things.
Reality is slowly starting to set in.
I’m leaving this place tonight.
Candles catch my attention on the counter in the kitchen. I look up, finding Blaze and North standing around what looks like a small cake and three candles atop. I bite my lip as Icross the space to them. North smiles wide and kisses me upon reaching him, and my other hand threads through Blaze’s.
“My birthday girl,” North says.
“Happy birthday, angel,” Blaze tells me, kissing my temple.
