His tongue darts over his lips as he finally figures out how to walk again, and he extends the tin to me just as he did the night before.

The high had been just enough to edge me to sleep.

“Not sure that’s a good idea to take and go out in public,” I say.

He smirks. “Different tin,” he replies.

I feel my eyes squinting as I consider it, and as the thought of facing a room full of strangers without a camera to hide behind fills me, I take one from his hand and bite it in half.

“I just need the edge off,” I tell him, and his smirk widens.

“Whatever you need, beautiful.”

I need him to throw me into the pool house, close the curtains, and fuck me senseless over the back of a chair.

Maybe then I can stop wondering what it would be like.

Maddox reaches for my hand and pulls it up to his mouth. I feel my breath catch when he sticks his tongue out to take the remaining half of the gummy from my palm, his eyes never leaving mine.

Fuck, why was that hot?

“Waste nothing,” he says, his voice low, fingers stroking my skin.

I don’t know what to do with myself. His gaze is steady upon me, only drifting to my lips when I let my own shift.

“If I was a palm reader, this would look less awkward to your entire family, who is staring at us through the window,” he says as his eyes flicker past my shoulder.

Mother fucker.

“Well, you did just lick my hand in broad daylight,” I taunt.

“Is there another time I should be licking your hand?” he asks, brow lifted.

I purse my lips, but only to stop from smiling. “No, what I’m saying is, you knew we were in full visibility of… well, everyone,” I say.

“I honestly forgot where we were. You’re very distracting,” he says.

“So this is my fault?” I ask.

“Clearly, this is your fault."

I have to bite my lips to stop from grinning stupidly. “So, why are you the one still holding my hand?”

My head tilts as I smirk at him, and the way he beams back makes my heart ache.

“Did you know that this line signifies how long you’ll live?” he says as I hear the sliding door open. “And this one… this is your headline—obviously you’re smart, so it’s pretty distinct, and then this one is your heart— Ow—”

A piece of hard candy hits him in the cheek.

Maddox looks up and drops my hand, glaring at someone nearby. “What the hell, shithead,” Maddox says, rubbing his face where Kamden hit him.

Kamden leans against the doorframe and smiles broadly. “You’re lucky it was me and not Reed,” he says. His eyes move to me. “Looking cozy, sis.”

Maddox runs at Kamden.

Kamden drops his smile and mutters, “Oh shit,” before darting to the other side of the pool. I barely register their running figures coming back around this side when Maddox grabs Kamden and wrenches him into a headlock.

“What’s…. What’s going on?” Reed asks as he emerges from inside.
