“I mean if you’ve found her, then don’t worry about what happened all those years ago. Be with her now and enjoy it.”

“Centurieslost,” I managed, almost shaking. “Centuries. Someone tampered with our history—erasedher from everything, and you want me to—“

“Let it go, kid,” Ares said firmly. “Don’t worry over what’s long lost.” He pushed past me, but I didn’t follow or turn.

Long lost… It was bullshit. I looked down at my phone, noticing the time, and then I heard a stream of water hit the ground.

Ares was pissing over the cliff.

“Classy,” I muttered, shaking my head. “If you’re not going to tell me anything, we’re done.”

“You want to know what happened, you ask your mother. Not me,” Ares said as he zipped up his pants. “I’m not getting in the middle of it.”

I glanced at him over my shoulder, seeing him shake his leg as he straightened himself out. My mother… fucking Styx. “That’s all I need you for,” I said, making my way to the driver’s side of my Jeep.

Ares’s scoff was a blurt of grunting noises. “Used,” he muttered. “As usual.”

“Don’t take it so personally,” I called back.

“When are we going for another tattoo?” Ares asked.

I paused at the door. “Is that your idea of connecting with me?”

“If it is?”

My jaw ticked. “Two weeks,” I told him. “Call your guy. We’ll get matching unicorns.”

“I’m holding you to that.”

CHAPTER THIRTEEN - CHLOE

ARE YOU AWAKE?

My heart jumped. I’d sat up most of the night staring at the television, unable to sleep for the string of thoughts constantly running through my mind. I picked up my phone, thinking maybe it was Tyler, but an unrecognizable number was responsible.

I think blood stopped circulating to my heart. Unknown numbers triggered something deep within me, some level of mistrust that I feared. It wormed its way through my bones and down into my stomach, settling in a pit that made me queasy. I stared at the message and the number, trying to figure out who could be texting me at 2 A.M. or if they even meant to text me as my heart began throbbing in my ears.

I turned away from the phone when the screen went dark and tried to focus on the storyline of the tv show I was watching. Then I began to fidget, scratching the inside of my palm and moving my foot anxiously.

My entire body jumped when the notification went off again.

It’s Gavin.

Fucking hell.

I breathed out a long sigh of relief, feeling like a bucket of cold air washed over my sweating skin. It took me a moment to collect my thoughts and calm my heart. I closed my eyes as I repeated back a few numbers, and when the phone came back on with the reminder alert, I finally grabbed it into my hands.

Hey.

Hi.

Can’t sleep?

Never, he replied.I noticed your favorite show was on a marathon. Thought I would see if you were watching.

I smiled at the screen. We had spent hours that night watching this reality yachting TV show, eating pizza, and making out on the couch.

Actually, I am. I’m surprised you remembered.
