I type a few buttons on my phone. Then loop my arm around her and walk her to the edge of the hill.
“What are we waiting for?” she asks.
“You’ll see.”
A few minutes later, thewhir-whir-whirof the drone comes over the hills.
She giggles in delight. “Are you serious? No way! Drone delivery?”
I kiss her on the cheek. Hold her tighter. “Nothing is too much for you, Bella. Not now. Not ever.”
EPILOGUE
Bella
One Year Later
The sun crests over our vineyard, drowning it in gorgeous light. I stand on the balcony—this oh-so special balcony where we’ve shared so many amazing times together—with one hand on my belly. In my other, I hold the special vintage. The one I made just for my husband.
My heart is warm, flooded with love. The smile on my face has become a permanent fixture ever since that special night on the hill. The night the helicopter brought us our food and, after, we made love in the grass.
Every day has been a fairytale. And sometimes, I’m sure Grandma is watching, an approving smile on her face. Urging me on into another glorious day.
Leo stops under the balcony, shading his face with his hand. “Ma’am, whenever you’re ready, we’d be delighted to show you the status of the grapes.”
“Thank you, Leo. I’ll be down soon.”
He inclines his head and walks away.
It took some time to get used to this. Being in charge. Running this place with my man. But I rose to the challenge, and now we’re moving into a bright future. Together.
I turn, lean against the balcony, look down at the vintage.
Is this cheesy?
Hell, what sort of question is that?
We’recheesy. And we’re proud of it.
My husband walks onto the balcony, wearing a loose-fitting shirt that outlines his muscles anyway. His hair is brushed to the side, silver glistening in the sun.
“Hey, beautiful.”
He sweeps me into his arms, kissing me passionately. I almost let it carry me away. Almost let the wordDaddyescape my lips. But if I said that, it’s game over. Neither of us will be able to stop.
“I’ve got something for you,” I murmur. “Something special.”
I hand him a book. Our hands brush as he takes it. Even now, electricity sparks between us.
He looks down at the cover. Tilts his head. “Hmm!” He raises one eyebrow. Realizing it’s not a book at all, he opens the flaprevealing a plastic strip. He picks out the plastic strip, holds it up to eye-level and stares at the little window. Two lines?
“Positive?” he whispers. I nod. Then he raises his voice, eyes glistening. “Positive! We’re going to have a baby, Bella!”
He pulls me into his arms. Lifts me off my feet. Spins me around as our lips find each other and tears flow down our cheeks.
