“He really likes you too.” In fact, I’ve never seen him take to another person as quickly as he had to Jordyn. That makes two of us.

“Want something to drink?”

“No thanks.”

She sashays over to the kitchen, probably on purpose. Her butt cheeks peek from the hem of her shorts like crescent moons, and her cropped T-shirt stops well above her waist. I swallow a pool of saliva. The only thing I want is her.

Jordyn opens the fridge and pours herself a glass of wine.

“We got the camera footage from the courier,” I say. “So far, it’s a bust. But my tech guy is working to get a clearer image.”

“Image of what?”

“It was grainy, but it looks like a male figure entered the store at 7:48 a.m., which fits the timing for when Bates left the apartment.”

“But that timing could also work for Talon.”

“True,” I concede. “How have things been with him?”

“Same. The work is getting done, and he hasn’t pulled another stunt. I would tell you if something happened, Jasper.”

I nod, although I’m skeptical. “And Bates?”

“Nothing unusual.” She takes a sip of wine. “Miss Carol made cupcakes, and Freddy delivered them to me a couple of hours ago—red velvet. I had one for dessert. It was pretty good. Want one?”

“You opened the door to him?”

“Um, yes, Jasper.”

“What did he say and do?”

“He didn’t say much; he never does. He pushed the Tupperware out toward me and mumbled, ‘These are from my mom,’ or something like that. I thanked him, and he left. That’s it, so you can wipe that I-can’t-believe-you-opened-the-door-to-a-serial-killer look off your face.

“I don’t want you alone with him, with Hunt either, until we know who’s doing this.”

“Is this a security check?” Her temper comes in quick and hot. “Is that why you’re really here?”

“No.”

“It seems that way. Aside from that kiss, you’re back to being Robocop. I’m not a client, so don’t treat me like one.”

“I don’t think of you as a client.” I reach her in two steps. “Come home with me.”

“What?”

Damn, where the hell had that come from? I didn’t even know the thought had been in my mind until I blurted out the words. With Jordyn, caution, common sense, and the rules all fly out the window. “For the weekend,” I continue rather than take a sensible step back. “That way, I can still keep an eye on my grandfather and be with you.”

She takes another sip of wine, her eyes thoughtful and suspicious. “Is this a ploy to keep me under watch too?”

I can’t lie that it’s a convenient by-product, but it’s not my primary motivation. “I want to be with you, Jordyn. That’s the truth.”

“What about your grandfather? He may not appreciate having a weekend guest.”

“Are you kidding? He’ll be over the moon to have you there.”

“Aw, that’s so sweet. Is there an extra bedroom?”

I smile at the lusty woman who is unapologetically herself, caring about my grandfather’s sensibilities. “I’m a grown man, Jordyn. He knows what’s going on.”
