Cameron didn’t feel reassured.
He left his post and went to the bathroom. He chose the last stall and pushed the tears out. They were blocked at first, but soon they came pouring. He yanked out his phone.
That damn voicemail. That was why he was off his game today. He listened to it again.
“Hey Cameron. It’s Walker. I just…I just wanted to see how you’re doing, how you’re enjoying Hollywood. And…I need to tell you something, but I don’t want to say it all on a voicemail. Give me a call.”
What did he have to tell me?Cameron wondered. Fury heated up his head. If Walker wanted to hear from him, fine. Cameron called him back. He wanted to get this over with and move on with his life.
“Hey,” Walker said.
“Hi, Walker. I got your message. What’s up?”
“Not much. I quit my job.”
“What?” Cameron yelped out.
“I did.” Walker sounded relaxed, or maybe that’s how the rest of the world was compared to life in the industry. “I started my own business designing ads. It’s doing okay. We’ll see how it goes.”
“Good for you.”
“I have to thank you,” Walker said. “You motivated me to make the jump. You went out there to pursue your dream, and you made me see it wasn’t too late to pursue mine.”
“I’m glad.” Cameron clenched his jaw.
“How are you doing out there? Are you writing?”
“Life is great here. Walker, why did you call?” Cameron could hear the asshole tone in his voice, but his emotions had taken over this conversation as soon as he dialed. “Because you walked away. You called me a fling and walked away. That was the last memory I have of Browerton, of us. Your back.”
“I hated every word I said that day. I didn’t want to hold you back.”
“You weren’t going to hold me back,” Cameron said coldly.
Silence took over the line. Cameron wanted to hear his voice again.
“What did you have to tell me?” He asked. “In your voicemail, you said you needed to tell me something.”
More silence. Cameron rubbed his hair.
“Walker?”
“I still love you,” Walker said. “And I miss you, Cameron.”
Cameron wiped away a tear.
“Do you miss me?” Walker asked.
“Five seconds ago you said you didn’t want to hold me back.”
“I know.”
“I love it here.”
“You didn’t answer my question, Cameron. Do you miss me?”
Cameron sunk against the stall wall. “It’s only been like four months. We’re still healing.” Although Cameron realized they’d now been apart longer than they were together. Why did it still feel so fresh and painful for him?
“Cameron…”
