Was this what people thought when they saw me with Noah? That he was my trophy husband?
“You seem to have an issue with my life choices, which is your problem, not mine. What concerns me is the company you’re keeping these days.”
He frowned. “What do you mean?”
“Getty isn’t trustworthy. I take it he was the one who told you the very confidential terms of my father’s will. If he’s the kind of person who’d do that to the CEO of the company he has a huge stake in, imagine what he’d do to someone disposable. I just don’t want you to get involved in something you’ll regret.”
“Don’t worry about me. I know what I’m doing.”
And that was the crux. “What exactly are you doing?”
Pierce’s business had no affiliation with mine. When we’d dated, my dad had been fond of him, and they often met when Pierce came to join me for lunch if I was in the city office. But now? I was worried Getty would use Pierce to get to me and that Pierce was angry enough with me to let himself be used.
“Getty has business contacts I’m interested in.”
“Just be careful with him, okay?”
He stood up straight. “Like I said, I can take care of myself. Was that everything?”
“Yes.”
He stood, but before he left, he looked me straight in the eye. “You might want to listen to yourself at some point.”
“What’s that supposed to mean?”
“You’re putting an awful lot of trust in people you don’t know.”
And with those parting words, he left.
I thought about his words for a moment. Did he mean Noah?
Yes, I wouldn’t disagree with him entirely. I’d put a lot of trust in a man I’d met as a one-night hookup.
Noah was also more than that. He was a businessman, a family man, a caring and generous person.
Pierce thought I had to be careful with my business when it came to Noah, but I was more worried about my heart.
My phone dinged with a string of messages from Noah.
Noah
I had a super stressful day. Adam. My soon-to-be-married loving brother…
I’m saying this because I have to remember I love him.
He made me sit through five different versions of his wedding vows.
FIVE!!!?!!!?!!!?!!!
That was a scary amount of punctuation for a single-word message.
Noah
May I remind you Adam is the word man in this company. If he can’t get the words out about how he feels about marrying Victoria, then no one else can.
I certainly can’t *grin emoji*
Anyway, I’m temporarily emotionally damaged and need repair.
