“Dais?” A voice jerks me out of the memory and my eyes snap open.
“Huh?” I ask, looking around in confusion. I’m still in the back seat of Noah’s truck. Only now we’re parked outside of our house.
“You’re crying,” Bella states, concern etched all over her face.
“I am?” I ask, swiping at my face. Sure enough, my hands come away wet with tears.
“Are you okay?”
I dip my head in a barely-there nod, reaching for the door handle. “I’m fine, Bells. Thanks for the ride, Noah.”
I take off toward the front of the house before either of them can question me further.
The moment my bedroom door closes behind me, I collapse against it, the sob I was holding in breaking free from my throat. I let the emotions take over as I sink to the floor and grievefor everything I’ve lost.
CHAPTER 7
KILLIAN
I’m halfway home when headlights illuminate the dark lane and Noah’s truck pulls up beside me. He doesn’t wind down the window and tell me to get in, he just waits there, on the side of the road until I do it.
I narrow my eyes slightly, trying to get a glimpse of the inside of the truck, and once I’m sure it’s just him in there, I climb in the passenger side.
“You good, man?” he asks as he makes a U-turn and takes off down the road in the direction of his family ranch where my truck is still parked.
“Peachy,” I grunt.
“You wanna tell me what happened back there?”
“Nope.”
He stays silent a moment before asking, “you sure?”
“She couldn’t even fucking look at me. Did you notice that?” I ask.
Noah shoots me a pitying look before focusing back on the road. “Yeah. I noticed. Think everyone did.”
“I don’t get it, Noah. What could I have possibly done that she can’t even look at me?” I ask the question that’s been plaguing my mind all night.
Noah releases a long sigh. “I’m going to say something here that’s probably gonna piss you off.”
Turning my head to look at him, I raise a brow and wait.
“Have you ever thought that maybe it’s not somethingyoudid and in fact it’s somethingshedid?”
I stare at him, dumbfounded.
Surely, he’s not suggesting what I think he’s suggesting, is he?
“Elaborate,” I say, breathlessly, knowing exactly what he’s going to say next and dreading the moment he speaks it into existence.
“You know what I mean, Kill. It’s sort of the only thing that makes sense. Why else would she just up and disappear on your wedding day?”
My jaw ticks. “You think she cheated on me and couldn’t go through with the wedding? That’s what you’re suggesting, right?”
Noah shrugs casually, as if his words aren’t completely tearing my world apart right now. “It’s possible.”
Is it? I try to think back to the lead up to the wedding day, searching for something I may have missed.
