Colton shook his head. "I don't think so. She usually tries to pawn that off on someone else."
"She didn't say anything to me about leaving, so I have no idea."
Wren gave Sarah a quick wave. "I'll come over to your cabin in a couple hours?"
"That'll work. I'll wait for you before I start."
Drake poked her after Wren left. "Putting our guests to work?"
"She asked," Sarah answered with a poke back.
"Do you get the sense that something is a little off?"
"I do. I don't know what though."
Colton snorted. "We always find out, so just be patient and all things will make sense."
Sarah agreed. "I just wish we didn't always have to figure it out the hard way."
Joey, Drake's wife, walked up to them. "You know she's a dragon, right?"
The Hale siblings all stared at her. Sarah found her tongue first. "She is?"
"Yeah, I can see both entities."
Colton shrugged. "Well, I guess this makes it all that much more interesting."
"I'll see if I can find out something while we're baking later," Sarah informed them. "I won't make it an interrogation, but I'll see if I can get her to tell me."
Vinia still wasn't back before Sarah went back to her cabin. She laid on her bed staring at the ceiling and thinking of Luke. How can I miss someone so much that is marrying someone else?
Luke had known his father would pressure him to marry, but Sarah couldn't figure out why he hadn't fought for her to be his betrothed. Had he tried at all? The question circled around in her mind, but she had no answer.
She reluctantly got back on her feet when Wren knocked on the door a little bit later. "Come on in."
"Am I interrupting?" Wren closed the door behind her.
"Nah, I was just resting. I tend to do that a lot these days."
"Well, once the baby's here, you won't be able to do that for eighteen years."
Sarah laughed. "Thanks for the reminder."
They went through to the bakery, and Sarah handed Wren an apron. "Let's get started, shall we?"
Once they had all of the ingredients mixed together and came to the kneading part, Sarah glanced over at Wren. "So, why didn't you tell us that you were a dragon?" She had thought about it and being direct was going to get the best results. Or the pregnancy hormones were making her less patient. Either way, she'd get a straighter answer with a direct question.
Wren noticeably started and almost dropped her dough. "You know?"
"Why wouldn't I?" She didn't want to out Joey's ability to see shapeshifters.
"Well," Wren said as she exhaled deeply, "you might as well know because the truth will come out anyhow, and you seem like such a nice family."
Sarah braced herself. "Am I about to learn more than I'm going to want to know?"
Wren smiled. "No, it's not that bad. Well, maybe it is. But either way, you need to know." They put the dough in pans that Sarah covered so they could rise.
"Come on," Sarah offered. "Let's take coffee and go sit. My ankles are already swelling."
