“Ernest, what are you doing here man? Where’s Christin?”

Ernest looked surprised that Broch was still around. He was talking to someone, helping them pick up a burnt momento of their old life.

“Hey, Broch. I thought you would be headed back by now. What the hell happened?”

“Dragons.” Broch wasn’t going to be sidetracked from his original question. He asked it again and Ernest seemed to realize that he wasn’t joking around.

“She is back at the house. She told me that she wasn’t going to go anywhere.”

“And you believed her? She is trying to get her kid back, and she isn’t going to stop for anything until that happens.”

“I’m sorry, man, but she promised, and she seemed to know that I wanted to be here.”

Broch was going to deal with him later. He at once called his house to see if someone would pick up. When no one did, it made him feel weird inside, like something was definitely going to happen if he didn’t get home. It might have already happened. His house could be in flames right then. It wouldn’t be that far out of the realm of possibility.

“Fuck, Ernest, after what’s going on, I wanted you to stay with her. She isn’t safe!”

Leonard walked up and asked what was going on. Broch didn’t want to say any of it out loud. His second wouldn’t understand, didn’t understand why he had saved her to begin with.

“I have some news, Broch.”

“Alright, what do you have?”

“I think we need some privacy. You might not want this to get out, but I ran a trace on that name you gave me, and you will never guess who it came back to.”

Broch looked to Ernest and decided that maybe it wasn’t the right time to see what was going on with him there. Broch knew that Leonard wouldn’t have said anything about privacy if he didn’t think that some was needed, though he couldn’t for the life of him figure out why he would need privacy. It didn’t make any sense, so after Ernest walked off, he asked Leonard what was going on.

“So, you ran a trace on the name, and what?”

“She’s from an ancient line of dragons, Broch. I didn’t get anything before, because I was running her through a human database, but it was when I started asking around with our world and people, that it came up. Her father is the king, or was. She is a princess, Broch. She is the Sinclair dragon princess!”

“If she is one of them, then why are we being attacked?”

“Get this. It’s her father’s army that did it. I know almost for sure. I have one more thread I need to figure out and then I will know everything. But I’m telling you, these are Christin’s people.”

Broch didn’t want to believe it. He was still trying to wrap his head around it all, but he knew it was true. It was crazy to hear it said, but at the same time, he’d known that something was off and different about her. He would have never imagined dragon princess, but it wasn’t that hard to see. There was always something that drew him in. Could it be that they were one and the same, and that’s why he felt so close to her?

“So, you’re saying that Christin’s people did this? Are you sure it was them?”

“By the banner they flew and the color and descriptions of the dragons, yes. It’s her family, Broch. What are we going to do about this? If people find out that she had something to do with it, someone that you brought into the clan, I don’t know, but it’s not going to end well.”

Broch should have been alarmed, but he wasn’t. He was far more worried about what was really going on. Why would Christin’s people start attacking the people that freed her? It didn’t make sense and he told Leonard that he was going to go see her father and see what was going on. There had to be some misunderstanding.

“You can’t go over there, Broch. You don’t know what will be waiting for you.”

“I can’t let any more of my people die because of something I did, Leonard. I will end this once and for all. That’s all I have to do.”

Leonard nodded his head, but he wasn’t happy about it.

“Take care of everything while I’m away, okay?”

“And if you don’t come back?”

Broch scoffed. “Do you think that you can get rid of me that easily?”

“These are dragons, Broch. We don’t know anything about them, just that they can do this. You don’t even know what they did this for.”

“I know. Don’t you think that it is the right thing to do and find out? We are about to go to war with dragons. Fuck that. There has to be some kind of mistake and I will fix this. You take care of things here, and I’m going to go find them and find out why the hell they did this.”
