“Who was after you, Christin?”

Her hands covered her breasts and she sighed. “My husband’s people I would imagine. He must have seen me when I drove by my son’s school.”

“You drove by there several times, for several days.”

“You’ve been following me.”

Broch straightened up his clothes. “A man in my position has to know who he is getting involved with.”

“You already knew enough about me. You could have asked.”

“What are you doing then?”

“I was going to take William today, while he was going to lunch or break. His bodyguard wasn’t there though, and it didn’t take long to see that someone was following me. They caught up with me in a traffic jam on the interstate. I was hoping to outrun them, but as you can imagine, that didn’t happen. They shot at me; Ernest shot at them. That was the gist of it.”

Broch had already figured out enough about her whereabouts, but it was good to hear that he hadn’t been that far off.

“So, hubby knows you’re alive and back in town. Is he going to try and kill you?”

Christin agreed. “Without a doubt.”

She had her shirt back on and Broch wished that he didn’t have to be the way he was. He wished that he could fall back into bed with her. Then, he wouldn’t have to worry about any of it. Being the boss wasn’t always all that it was cracked up to be. Sometimes, it just sucked.

“I need to go, Christin. I have my own issues of life and death to deal with. I would bring you with me, but I have a feeling that it would be too much for you. The house is safe, and no one would dare attack you here.”

“You don’t know what my husband is and what he dares.”

“I can take you somewhere else.”

Christin waved him off. “No, you should go take care of your business. Thank you for saving me, Broch.”

“I will protect you with my dying breath, Christin.” He meant it too.

Chapter 19

Christin

He promised to protect her, but Christin found it pretty ironic that he left moments later after saying that. She was trying her best not to let it all get to her, but it was. There was a part of Christin that was sure that Phillip was going to find her there and she would never get to see Broch again. They would never be able to be together, like they both so desperately wanted. Christin had felt the way that Broch had touched her.

She was in a daze for a while after he left. Christin got up and she got dressed, hoping that a shower would work. It helped to wake her up a bit more, but she felt like her hands were tied. Christin thought about leaving, but Ernest was there, waiting by the front door.

“What are you doing, Ernest?”

“Making sure you are safe. Broch’s orders.”

Christin didn’t like the way it was said, like she had no say in it, even though it was her life and her safety. Christin didn’t think that Ernest was going to be able to keep her safe, not if he knew what he was up against. It was a stretch for wolves to go up against a dragon. There would have to be many of them, magical or not. Christin had seen dragons taken down by something that size before, but it had been six to one and Ernest, no matter where his intentions lied, would not be able to save her.

“You don’t know what is coming for me, Ernest. Maybe you should go help Broch. If they come for me here, I don’t want anything to happen to you.”

“Happen to me?” Ernest scoffed and then he chuckled like that was the funniest thing he’d ever heard. Ernest was not so tall, but he was bulky. He had flaming red hair and his attitude showed that he wasn’t all that impressed with things. He was confident, cocky, he was the sort of guy that wouldn’t heed warnings. He was too tough to be cautious and that’s what Christin was afraid of. She needed caution, not chaos. Christin had enough of that already.

“I’m serious, Ernest. There is a lot that Broch and you don’t know. I should have said something, but I just couldn’t, you know?”

He didn’t know and Christin waved him off, apologizing and asking him if he knew where the Tylenol was. He said that he did, and he went to go grab it. Christin took that time to get herself ready to leave and she was at the car when Ernest came out, He didn’t look happy for her antics.

“If you take off, Broch is going to kill me.”

“Come on, he won’t actually kill you, right?”
