Christin set her glass down and went to the fridge. After the long run that he had taken, she knew that he was going to be hungry, for protein most likely, so she cooked up a couple of steaks. She was hungry too, as flying always took it out of her.

When he got back downstairs, Broch thanked her for dinner. He went right for it and Christin was able to observe him for a moment. He had no shirt on, and his trimmed waist was barely covered by the table. She could see his large shoulders and imagined those big hands on her. It was all in her mind, the best that she’d ever had, and Christin knew that it had just been so long. She hadn’t had sex in her marriage since that first night, so many years ago. Christin’s body craved what Broch had to offer, even if he wasn’t paying attention.

“So, tell me about yourself.”

Christin crinkled her nose up and shook her head. “It’s boring. I want to know more about you, my savior. Who were you rescuing from prison?”

“Brother and cousin.”

“Ah, so they were innocent?”

He shook his head and smiled. “Probably not if I am honest, but it was self-defense.”

“How are we all cleared now?”

“I know a guy.”

Christin chuckle. “I need to have friends like that.”

“It’s helpful.”

“You said before that you helped me because you were supposed to. Who told you to help me?”

Broch smiled and took another bite.

“This is awesome. You really know how to cook.”

“I just cooked it a few minutes on each side, pretty easy. So, who told you to help me?”

“It’s not like a person told me or anything. I just had a feeling that you needed to get out of there, that you didn’t belong. Was I wrong?”

Christin agreed that he wasn’t. She didn’t belong there.

“No, I just, how did you know?”

“It was something in your eyes. You just look innocent. Are you?”

Christin pressed her lips together. She wasn’t prepared to give away too much, but damn if his smile and charm didn’t want to make her open up just a little bit more. She was sure that there was something that he was doing to her, even if she didn’t know what that something was.

“I wouldn’t say that I am innocent, but I didn’t do what they said I did.”

“What, like the torture and all of that?”

Christin trembled when a shiver ran through her. The body of Danika was forever going to be burned into her mind. She wished that it was an image that she would be able to let go of, but Christin knew that it would be impossible. Some things just can’t be unseen.

“Like any of it. I didn’t touch Danika. I knew about them for years, right after we got married actually. It was better that way. Danika liked Phillip; I never did.”

Christin watched Broch take another bite and wash it down with wine.

“I knew you were innocent. What is it that you need from me?”

Christin was amazed with the question. How did he know? She wanted to lay it all out on the line, but she wasn’t ready, not just yet. Neither one of them was probably ready for the truth. It was scary.

“I just need some time to figure things out, that’s all.”

“Like I said, Christin, take all the time you want.”

“What do you want in return?”
