“What happened?” Lilly whispered, paling.

“Elisabeth.” Abigail gasped. “She is missing.”

Chapter 6

Kai sat in his bed, staring at the ceiling, still shocked by what Lilly told him. He couldn’t believe that there was a chance that he might never walk again. As a werebear, he was used to running around and jumping, something which was essential to his role as a tracker. Without it, he didn’t even know who he was.

Then, there was the sudden mysterious appearance of Lilly. Where had she been all this time? Why had she just disappeared like that? Why did she never reply to his messages? Kai closed his eyes as he remembered her beautiful face and the way her curves felt as he caressed them. He couldn’t believe it that she was married to that asshole. Kai clenched his hands in anger as he remembered the way her husband had treated her. Anger spread like fire through his veins, and he almost wished that he had snapped that man’s neck.

He had been in this bed for two days now, and he hadn’t seen Lilly once. He was being looked after by girls who had received some training in the field of medicine. Kai had found out that the hospital was just an old cabin that was used to treat and heal the injured. A few girls had some medical training, and the others simply volunteered to help. It was all they could manage in a small part of the forest while hiding from their enemy.

It was surprising how well they had managed to hide from the Rain clan. Kai knew that as bears everyone had heightened senses, which meant that hiding from them was extremely tricky. But, the humans seemed to have managed it. Somehow.

The door opened and Kai knew instantly that Lilly was here. There was a smell that surrounded her, a floral scent that entranced him. He could recognize it miles off. She walked in, carrying the baby on her hip who was making playful noises. Kai took in her outfit which consisted of a tight shirt which showed her ample breasts and a tight pair of jeans which hugged her ass. She wore a simple belt that held her gun and a small dagger.

“Lilly,” Kai whispered, and she instantly turned to look at him. Then, she turned around and resumed checking up on every patient before finally making her way towards Kai.

“It’s been a very long time,” Kai said, smiling as she approached him.

“I had to lead the squad into another mission,” Lilly said. “We finally managed to ambush one of their wagons and steal a few guns and supplies.”

“I meant that it’s been years,” Kai said, as Lilly handed the baby over to an assistant and started removing the dressing around his knee. “Where did you go, Lilly? I came back, but you weren’t there-”

“It’s all in the past, Kai,” Lilly said, firmly. “Forget about it.”

“Forget about it?” Kai said. “How can I forget about it?”

Lilly didn’t reply as she concentrated on removing the bandages. The instant they came off, a foul smell hit the air, and Lilly flinched. Kai felt his heart sink as he realized what it meant.

“It’s infected, isn’t it?” he asked, his voice heavy.

“I am afraid so,” Lilly whispered. “I was hopeful that we got the stake out in time, but it seems the acid did more damage than we thought.”

“Right,” Kai said, swallowing his feelings. As Lilly started to work on applying the medicines and the dressing, Kai felt a soft gentle touch on his arm. The baby had reached over the assistant's lap and was playfully tugging on Kai’s arm.

“Do you want to hold her?” Lilly asked, noticing Kai’s expression.

“I am not sure,” Kai said, feeling a sudden wave of nervousness. “What if I drop her?”

“You are a tracker and one of the best warriors of your clan,” Lilly said, looking amused. “You don’t have to be scared of a baby.”

“I would rather not,” Kai said, slowly pulling his arm away from the baby. He wanted nothing to do with the child, especially because it was just a painful reminder that Lilly would never be his. The child made him feel awkward and insecure for some reason, and he wanted nothing to do with it.

“I did the best I could,” Lilly said, cleaning up the supplies. “Let’s hope it starts healing soon.”

“Lilly, why won’t you tell me where you went?” Kai asked, desperation overcoming him. “Where have you been all these years? How could you just get married like that? Did I mean nothing?”

“Kai, just forget it. It’s all in the past now. We can’t change it,” Lilly said, looking away,

Kai reached over and grabbed her wrist, stopping her from walking away. “It’s all in the past? It’s not in the past for me, Lilly. I still care for you the same way that I did all those years ago. How could you marry someone else like that? How could you?”

“I didn’t have a choice,” Lilly said, not meeting his eyes. “There was nothing I could do. Father made me marry Kevin, and I couldn’t say anything to him.”

“You should have waited for me. Just delayed it for a little while. I would have come back-” Kai said.

“Would you have?” Lilly whispered, cutting him off. “I did what I had to do. I did what my circumstances and your betrayal made me do.”

“What betrayal?” Kai asked frowning.
