“Can I have it?” Abbi asked.
“Of course.”
She smiled so bright, her whole face lit up.
The werewolves relaxed slightly.
“Thank you.” She shrugged it on and looked over at Lu again. “You found it.”
“Yes, I did.”
“You’re good at finding things.”
It was a statement, but I had most of my attention on the group of shifters behind her. They didn’t like this line of questioning. I wondered why.
“Sometimes,” Lu said. “Some things.”
“Magic things?”
“Sometimes.”
“Can you find something for me? Help find something for me?”
“Abbi,” Summer warned. “We don’t need them.”
“Is she a part of your pack?” I asked the wolf. Abbi wasn’t distressed, but it was clear they didn’t like her talking to us. “Is she family?”
Summer strolled forward, strength radiating off her. If she wasn’t the head of the pack, the Alpha, she was in very high standing. Two men moved forward out of the tall grass to stand at either side behind her. One had eyes the color of chipped glaciers.
“She belongs,” Summer said.
I wasn’t sure what that meant.
“Do you need a safe place?” I asked Abbi.
Abbi’s face scrunched up and her nostrils twitched. She didn’t look away from Lu though. “I am safe with them. Summer and Danube and all of them. They love me.”
The man I thought might be Danube, who was standing beside Summer, snorted.
“They do,” Abbi insisted. “They worship me.”
I flicked a gaze at Summer, and she met mine with a bemused expression.
“Worship is going a little far, don’t you think?” she said.
“Oh, no. You all love me. It’s why you think you’re looking after me.”
“Wearelooking after you,” said the man with those blue, blue eyes.
Summer lifted her hand to warn him to silence. He huffed and crossed his arms over his chest.
“We don’t trust strangers, Abbi,” Summer said.
Abbi rolled her eyes and mouthedwerewolves. “They aren’t strangers now, are they? They know my name and their names are…”
“Lu and Brogan,” Lu said.
Abbi smiled. “Lu and Brogan. You’re not afraid of the dark are you?”
