Her nostrils flared, almost like she was sniffing me. She parted her perfect lips, her tongue flicking out like she was tasting the air. What the…?

“Is Gabriel here?”

My pulse spiked, and my jaw clenched. Of course, she was here for Gabe, but whynow? There was no way they were still a thing. He was over her. She hadn’t been around in years.

Then it hit me. There was only one reason why she could be here. She wanted him back.

And there was no way I was going to fucking let that happen. I was not a jealous woman by nature, but the bond I shared with my mate pulled tight on my core. Little alarm bells went off in my head, and all I could think wasget her away. Don’t let her in.

Whatever her reason for showing up here, it was bad news.

“He’s sleeping,” I snapped, my eyes narrowing into sharp slivers.

To my surprise, her lips curled into an amused grin. “Then wake him up.”

“I’m not going to do that. Look, I don’t know why you’re here, but I will tell you that you’re wasting your time. He’s got a new girlfriend.”

Miss Perfect Ass quirked her head, silken locks spilling over one shoulder over her blazer. Her expression grew hooded, unreadable. “Really? And who might that be?”

“Me,” I said with a flare of pride, my chest swelling. That’s right,me.It’s a claim I never thought I’d be able to make. But my delight was shortly outlived as the woman’s mouth twisted into the most brutal of grins I’d ever seen. For some inexplicable reason, panic struck me like a bolt of lightning, and I found myself standing completely frozen in place as she pushed her way inside the condo.

Her eyes gleamed with weighty judgment as they scraped over my body, wearing nothing but the afghan. Oh, God. I was so stupid. It all dawned on me in an instant.

She was a celestial too.

“You’ve made this investigation extremely easy for me, Melanie. For that, I thank you.”

My throat constricted, panic bolting up my spine. They’d already come for us.

They’d already found out.

By the way Gabe had spoken of it last night, he’d made it sound like we were going to get found out eventually. Butthissoon? Panic cut through my lungs. This was all my fault. They were going to hurt him.

Miss Perfect Ass wasn’t just Gabriel’s ex. She was an angel, and clearly, she had some kind of authority that could take his wings away.

“He didn’t do anything wrong. He’s done his job. He’s protected me! Don’t hurt him!”

My pathetic pleas were met only with a snide sneer. She propped a hand on her hip and heaved a bitchy flip of her hair. “Tell me, little human,” she said, her voice tight and unkind, “if nighttime security at a museum was found fucking the stuffed animal exhibit, do you think he’d be allowed to keep his job just because he managed to keep the pieces from getting stolen by burglars?”

I blinked at her, completely thrown off by her ridiculous analogy.

“Hmph. Didn’t think so.” She pushed past me toward the bedroom where Gabriel slept, her heels clacking against floorboards.

“Wait! wait, please!” I shouted at her, shaking myself from shock. She ignored me.

A noxious cocktail of terror and ire spiked my bloodstream, making my head spin. All I could do was trail behind the gorgeous creature, wrapped in nothing but a blanket with my head hung in shame.
