Rage struck me like a lightning bolt. “Really? ‘It’s not you, it’s me?’ You’re goingthere? That’s utter bullshit.”
“Itisbullshit. But not in the way you think. One day I can probably tell you why but right now I can’t—”
Gabe was interrupted by the muffled ring of my cell phone. The only person that would be calling me this late was Jessica. Thankful for the distraction, I dug my phone out of my backpack and answered.
“Hey, Jess…”
“Woah, you sound pissed. Did I call at a bad time?”
Gabe could apparently hear her question as he snorted, forcing his gaze away from me to the darkness outside.
“No. You called at the perfect time, actually.”
“Oh, good. I’msosorry I had to ditch you tonight. I’m such a horrible friend.”
“Yes, how dare you leave my birthday party to go save lives,” I tried to joke, but my comment just ended up coming out as sad and pathetic. Jess honed in on my tone immediately.
“Hey, something is wrong. What happened?”
I looked over at Gabe, who refused to look at me.
“Um…I can’t really talk about it right now.”
“Oh my God, it’s about Gabriel, isn’t it? You have to tell me everything. I know it’s late, but do you want to meet right now? I still owe you for ditching you.”
“Yeah. I’d like that.”
I could really use some alone time with Jess. Maybe she could help me decipher what was going on with him. She was more experienced when it came to the world of men.
“Awesome. Want to hit up the Unicorn?”
“Actually…” I took a deep breath. “Let’s hit up Siren’s.”
