She crosses her arms over her chest and approaches but doesn’t sit. “You were, were you?”

“And apologizing to him in advance for being an asshole.”

“Ah, well, that’s probably smart. You can be an asshole, George.”

Declan smiles, but with that bashful hint to it that I’d call subby under any other circumstances.

“I’m sorry, Case. I was an asshole to you,too.”

She sighs and walks over to me for a hug. “Yeah, but you’reourasshole, and we need you in full fighting form. Don’t fightus, huh?”

That earns her a soft snicker from Declan.

“Thanks for putting up with me, guys,” I say. “I appreciate it.”

She looks over my shoulder at him. “Did he give you permission to call him an asshole?”

Declan actually laughs. “Yes, ma’am, he did.”

“Excellent.You get it in writing? He is a sneaky goddamned attorney, after all.”

Another laugh. “I think I can trust him, ma’am.”

I’d swear there were capitalM’s on thosema’ams, but maybe I’m wrong.

She looks up at me, her gaze stopping somewhere around my mouth, not looking me in the eyes. “I think so, too,” she says.
