“Forget I said that. I wasn’t trying to trap you into anything. It was just a casual observation. Okay?”

“Yeah,” I said, nodding. “I like you, Maegan, and I don’t want to hurt you.”

“Then don’t.” She made it sound so simple, but nothing was easy when it came to human emotions. Maegan smiled sweetly at me. “I only ask that you’re honest with me. If I can’t handle the truth, then that’s on me. I can’t stand dishonesty or games. Be upfront and truthful, and I promise you that we won’t have any problems.”

“Yeah, I can handle that.” Only time would tell if that would work between us.

“Good.”

We fell silent when Maegan dug into her second slice of pizza, and I resumed drinking my beer. Even though we were virtually strangers, it was a comfortable silence rather than the awkward one you’d expect. I had no idea where the fuck this was going between us, but for the first time in a long time, I wanted to pull someone close instead of walking away without a backward glance.

It was scary shit.
