I sat and stared at all three at the table while the cappuccino’s machine sprayed the dark drink with a creamy foam. So Cole was going all out. This was serious.
I sat, and Jersey moved to sit next to me. For some reason, he felt like he had to do this when we discussed serious topics.
“You’re not getting any younger,” said Tobias.
“Gee, thanks. That’s horribly romantic, especially first thing in the morning.”
“Actually, it’s time for lunch,” said Cole, who was usually the first person to think of his stomach.
“Fine. Then. What’s up?”
“Well,” said Rory. “We got our tests back.”
“The STD tests?”
“Yes,” said Tobias.
“Soooo, any problems?”
“No, hon,” said Rory. “We’re all clean and can dispense with the condoms.” He pointed to the box on the table.
“Yep,” said Cole. He settled the coffee cup before me and picked up the condom box and chucked it into the garbage.
“Well, that’s great.” The condoms were more of a problem for them than me anyways.
“Then,” said Tobias, “it got us to thinking.”
Uh, oh. This is the part where they wanted me to do something.
“Yes?”
“We thought about children.”
I made the time-out sign with my hands.
“Whoa, back up. Who started talking about children?”
“Well, I did,” confessed Tobias.
“Yeah, lawyer man isn’t getting any younger.”
“Cole,” I growled in warning.
“No, it’s okay, Jacy,” said Tobias. “He’s right.”
“And then,” said Rory, “we started thinking about who would go first, and if there was a way to figure that out.”
“Go, first?” I said slowly. “Do you not think you should discuss that with me?”
“You would choose?” asked Tobias. “And how would you do that?”
“Well, I’d—” I looked at the unhappy faces at the table. It suddenly hit me what a massive mistake that would be. I’ve had to balance my time with each one, and not show favoritism to any of them. And in truth, the fact was I couldn’t choose between them to begin with. But that didn’t mean we wouldn’t or didn’t have problems with jealousy, or someone feeling slighted from time to time. Three of them were emotionally driven musicians, and Tobias was sensitive that these three were considered sex gods as well as rock stars. He felt he had to compete.
“Well, we’ll just go without protection and—”
“Nah,” said Rory. “That would make it into a competition, and we don’t need that.”
“Yeah, who wants to see whose swimmers get there first?” said Cole.
