He nods, turning his face towards me with a serious look. “They’re not messing around. Who are they?”
I draw up my knees to my chest, hugging them. “Not… nice people. They seem to want me quite badly.”
“Because you’re an omega.” My head shoots up as I recoil, and he rolls his eyes. “A girl like you, this close to the wall? I’ve heard enough about what happens in Navarre to put the pieces together.”
My fingers pick at the covers. “You gonna tell them?”
Emmett sighs. “Do I look like that kind of asshole?”
My locked up muscles relax a little, but the tension doesn’t leave me completely. “Are they trying to get inside?”
Emmett shakes his head. “I don’t think they suspect you’re here. More like they’re covering as much ground as possible. They told me they were looking for a girl with pink hair. Acting all concerned for your welfare. Figured I should come and check just in case, but I told them I hadn’t seen anyone like that.”
“Thank you,” I whisper. “I’m sorry to be a trouble.”
Emmett nods. “Seems like the people around you are the trouble. Not your fault. You might want to lie low for a while, though.”
I peek at him. “Here?”
He shrugs awkwardly. “Room’s empty. So’s the bar most of the time since we’re pretty far out, though I’ve got a few regulars that come in. All of them are good people. So if you’re looking for a place to hide out, omega, I’d say this might be your best bet.”
My heart flips over. “I’m Sienna.”
He clicks his tongue. “Nice to meet you. I’ll leave you in peace, just wanted to let you know what was happening and not to go near the window.”
Nodding, I wrap my arms around myself as Emmett closes the door softly behind him before I lay back down, my eyes focused on the window.
I’m tempted to look. Just a little. Just in case.
Maybe it’sthem.
Maybe they’ve come back for me.
My feet land on the bare wooden boards, my toes scrunching as I wobble to my feet.
I won’t open the curtains. I’ll just… take a really quick peek through the crack, like Emmett did. My feet aren’t particularly steady as I weave my way across the room until I’m standing in front of the crack. Leaning forward, I look through the gap cautiously. The setting sun highlights the yard in front of the building I’m holed up in, and I can see the storage shed straight ahead of it.
My eyes move straight to the three men standing in a loose circle, talking animatedly, and I shove my disappointment down. Of course it’s not them.
Fucking pathetic, Sienna.
The trio in front of me I recognise from the black boots and khakis. All three look big, menacing, with shaved heads and hands that flex on the handle of the guns they’re carrying.
If they get hold of me, I won’t be getting away.
I stumble backwards, putting enough distance between me and the window to help me breathe as I crawl back into the bed, tugging the covers over myself until I’m cocooned and my chest doesn’t feel as tight.
Fucking hell. What an absolute shitshow. I’m separated from my family, abandoned by my pack, stuck in the forest with a strangely good-looking beta bar owner and a pack of neanderthal meatheads who want totry outan omega prowling around outside.
Maybe I’ll write a book one day. You know. If I survive.
The minutes tick by, and I stay where I am until Emmett taps on the door.
“They’re gone. Some food here for you,” he calls through the wood. “Figured you might be hungry. Bathroom is across the hall.”
I unwrap myself enough to call back to him. “Thanks, Emmett.”
“Welcome.” He whistles lightly as he moves away from my door, his footsteps creaking.
