“Not that,” I reassure him. I might only be a few weeks gone, but Cade has been slightly overprotective since they first scented my pregnancy. “I’m fine. But, Cade, look.”
My phone starts blowing up with messages. Hudson and Axel are both at work, but it’s clear that word is spreading quickly. I leave them for now, listening intently to the man speaking on the news. Hundreds of cameras and microphones are pushed into his face, but everyone is completely silent as he talks.
Justice Imler, one of the five Supreme Justices tasked with overseeing the Justice system across the country, stares into the camera. He’s a handsome alpha, his eyes a deep shade of green with thick dark wavy hair, but so cold.
He leans in, speaking directly into a microphone.
“We ask for privacy, to protect the health of our unborn child. That is our priority, and we will not be answering further questions at this time. We will of course provide relevant updates as needed to support any medical advances in this area. Thank you.”
The camera cuts away to a clearly shell shocked news anchor. She shuffles paperwork on her desk.
“This is a recap,” she says, her voice a little too high pitched. “Justice Emmett Imler has announced that he is expecting a child with an unknown partner.” Her hand shakes as she looks up. “A beta partner. To confirm, this is the first beta pregnancy to be confirmed for more than twenty years. More information to follow as we receive it.”
The bottom drops out of my stomach as I connect Ava’s words.
“Leah,” I repeat. “Leah is pregnant?”
Leah, Max’s very lovely, verybetatwin sister.
Ava hisses. “She didn’t even tell us! Max just left to go and talk to her. And withJustice Imlerof all people.”
Even as Ava panics, something warm starts to fill my chest.
If a beta is pregnant… then it means that things are changing. Really, truly changing.
It means that we might not spend the next twenty years or more constantly looking over our shoulder, worried about pro-Creed groups targeting our children.
It means that we might actually, finally be free.
