The moment feels so intimate that I turn to stare at the wall. Beside me, Ezra does the same. His eyes look suspiciously shiny as Ace ducks through into the spare front seat. I hear him murmuring with Devlin about our route out of the city.

It hits me. “We did it,” I breathe. We actually pulled this off. We got her out.

Ezra pats my arm. “You did. But now you’ve done it, what happens next?”

I can’t help it. I cast a look back to the tiny omega shaking on the bed. Max leans over her, not touching her but staying close.

I have no idea.

ChapterSeventeen

Bastien

Nik and I are glued to the screen in my office. Thanks to the tech I rigged up this morning, we can see and hear everything going on. Nik vibrates next to me, growls ripping out of him as he tries to get himself under control.

“Take a break and go and see Nash,” I urge, turning to him. “You look like shit, brother.”

He snaps his teeth at me but doesn’t move, his eyes not straying from the screen.

The screen displaying our soon-to-be guest.

They fucking muzzled her. Nausea climbs my throat at the thought.

She’s so fucking small, too. I think I could probably lift her with one hand. It’s hard to believe that she’s five months pregnant, although the swelling of her belly gives it away.

An idea hits me, and I swivel in my seat to the growling hulk next to me.

“Go and check on her room,” I suggest. “I don’t think it’s set up properly yet. I thought she’d want to do it, but she might not be well enough to sort it out straight away.”

Nik snaps his head towards me with a frown.

“You didn’t set it up for her?” he asks, aggravation lacing his tone. Pushing himself up from his chair, he stomps to the door. “Idiot,” I hear him grumbling as he heads upstairs.

A smile pulls at my lips, but it slides off as I turn back to my camera and worry fills me. Max is still kneeling next to her. He hasn’t moved for more than an hour except to check on the wires linking her to the monitors, check her vitals and give her water. Lucien keeps shifting in the corner of my screen, clearly uncomfortable in the small space.

The door opens behind me and Leah slips into Nik’s vacated seat. She passes me a coffee and I curl my hands around the mug, grateful for the warmth.

“Update?” she asks.

“Trackers are off. I redirected the cameras, plus a few others in case they track them and catch on.”

I turn to Lee as she stares at the screen, her face twisted in thought.

“Stone has half of the city searching for them, but they’re not looking this far out. They should be clear. Especially since we swapped the plates. Should be here in around an hour.”

She nods, lost in thought.

“We’re not prepared for this,” she says quietly.

We both stare at the screen as I consider her words. She’s right.

“When has that ever stopped us, though?” I nudge her shoulder with mine, and she nudges me back with a small smile. “Never stopped you, scrap,” she jokes.

“Hey!”

Leah snickers at me. I hate that nickname, and she knows it. I was scrawnier than Luc when we were kids, but the reason became obvious when he awakened as an alpha and I… didn’t.

I’m just a plain old beta.
