I prepare myself for the worst. I can’t blame the woman if she’s mad about tonight, but she seems to have taken it all in stride. She leans toward me. “I’m Katie, and I have to say, I don’t blame Logan at all. You’re beautiful.”

My face heats up. “You’re beautiful. I’m sorry about all this.”

She waves me off. “Are you kidding? I work all the time, so this has been an adventure for me. At least I’ve had something exciting happen.”

“What do you do?” I ask her as I take in Miller’s tense stature. He’s aloof, but I’ve never known him to be uncomfortable, and I don’t know what to make of it. Of course, I’ve only been around him a few times, but the way he’s looking right now doesn’t add up with all the stories Logan has told me about him.

Katie brings me back when she points at Penn. “I’m a nurse at the hospital with Penn.”

We talk a little about her job, and when there’s a lull in the conversation, Logan asks Penn, “Where’s Aria tonight? I thought for sure she’d be here. She loves this kind of thing.”

Penn nods without smiling. “She does love this kind of thing.”

The look he’s giving Logan says not to ask more. I met Aria years ago, and I’ve seen her a few times since I’ve been in Whiskey Run. There’s obviously something going on there, but I’m not in a place to ask. Whatever it is, the whole table is affected by it. Miller and Logan are both looking at their brother. They want to ask questions, but neither of them does.

Logan slides his hand into my lap and holds my hand.

He squeezes it, and I look at him as he whispers, “You okay?”

I nod. “Yeah, I’m good.”

After a rough start, the rest of the night goes off without a hitch. We eat, we dance, and Logan doesn’t let me leave his side the whole night. It’s almost time to go when he whispers in my ear, “Come home with me.”

I lift my eyes to his. “You want me to come to your house?”

He nods, and I can’t help but feel this is something big. I have to remind myself that tonight is the night we’re having the talk. Tonight could essentially be our last night together.

I nod. “Okay.”

“Did you walk here?”

I shake my head. “No, since I had to bring all my stuff and get ready here, I drove.”

He nods. “You want your car at my house? Or I can bring you back here tomorrow to get it.”

I bite my lip as I think about it. If I leave my car here, there’s going to be speculation that I’ve gone home with Logan. But if I park my car in his driveway, then the whole town will know I’m spending the night with him. I tilt my head to the side. “Can I park in your driveway?”

His jaw tightens, and he cups my cheek. “We don’t have to hide-—”

I nod with a blink. “I know, but let’s see what happens tonight and then?—”

He chuckles. “I know exactly what’s going to happen tonight. As soon as we get behind closed doors, you’re mine.”

I lean into him. I love how much he wants me, and it seems he’s not able to control it. “Sounds good.”

CHAPTER 15

LOGAN

I pull Bree into my side and am about to find the nearest exit. We ate, we danced, and I made the decision that I want her at my house, in my life, and with me period. This is not something temporary. I was a fool to think that was even possible. I’m going to hear her out, and then I’m going to find it within myself to forgive her, forget the past, and build a future with her.

Tonight when I thought I’d fucked up and that I might lose her, I knew right then that I couldn’t imagine my life without her in it.

I point at the closest exit, and Bree puts a hand to my chest. “Hold up there. We can’t just leave.”

I chuckle and wrap my arms around her. “Yes, wecan. Look, people are already leaving. We sure can walk right out of here.”

She smiles up at me. “Logan, your family is still here. We should at least say goodbye.”
