“Why you ain’t answering your phone?” was the first thing he asked when I picked up the call.

I sighed.

“Makari, I’ve been thinking. I think we should stop seeing each other now,” I said, holding my breath. He was silent. A little too silent.

“Say that again,” he finally answered. I expelled a sigh.

“I said I think we should stop messing around now, okay?”

He didn’t answer me again.

“Hello?” I asked when he still hadn’t said anything and then pulled the phone from my ear only to see that he’d hung up on me.

I guess that was easier than I thought but so needed. He was set to marry Ocean, end of story. This had to stop.

Maybe I should just go back to working with Carlene because I never saw him before when I did that.

This all started because I got the job at The Cove, so maybe it would end if I left there too.

Knowing what I needed to do, I picked up my phone to send a message to Mr. Blair giving him notice of my intention to quit, but my phone started ringing in my hand. It was Makari again.

I was confused about why he was calling me. Shaking my head, I answered.

“Why are you calling me back?” I questioned.

“Come outside.”

I froze.

“I’m sorry, what?” I asked just to be sure that I heard him the first time.

“I said, come outside.”

“I’m not at the club, Makari,” I said, since it was obvious that he thought that I was at work.

“I know.”

So why did he want me to come outside?

Frowning because I still didn’t understand what he was talking about, I looked over at my bedroom window, and a weird ass feeling hit me in the pit of my stomach.

“Wait? Are you outside of my house?” I asked, slowly approaching, and damn near passed out when I saw his car was in fact outside.

“Oh, my days. Are you crazy?” I was completely stuck seeing him outside of my house. Like, how did he even know where I lived?

“Come outside, Kairi,” he said, voice flat.

“No!”

“Either you come outside, or I’m coming inside. I don’t give a fuck who’s in there with you. Can’t nobody stop me.”

My mouth fell open, and I looked at my bedroom door. My dad was due home any minute now, and if he saw Makari outside of our house, I knew that all hell would break loose. There was no way for me to explain even knowing this man. My dad made it clear—stay away from anyone mixed up with The Society. Not only was Havoc well and truly mixed up in this mess, but he was the son of the damn man my father worked for. It didn’t get any more involved than that!

I’d been fucking the boss’s son. A son that I shouldn’t even know. There was no explaining that away.

“Five—”

“Okay,” I said, cutting off his countdown. Satisfied, Makari hung up on me.
