This zing was different and the fact that Jack had no boundaries had me wanting to run for the hills, rather than swoon like I had for Wade.

“All bad things, I hope.” The smile on Jack’s face grew when he finally spoke up. Now I could see both rows of his teeth with his smile. It was megawatt and deadly.

“Max only ever tells me the bad.” It was a little white lie, since Max told me everything when it came to his friends but the way Jack’s face dropped, I knew it worked. I was working my way out of this situation. His hand slowly slipped from mine. His fingers grazing across mine but they stopped when one of his fingers moved over my wedding band. His eyes locked with mine and the smile that was still on his face dropped completely. A thin line forming on his lips. His hand left mine immediately and he pulled away, taking a few steps back, creating more than needed space between us.

“It was nice to meet you.”

In a single moment, Jack went from this easy-going man, to a pure professional, who looked like he always belonged in a suit. He stood taller and placed his hands back in his pockets, but this time, he refused to look at me.

“I’ll call you later, Ma.”

Jack exited the room, only stopping when he got to the door of the office. He turned back but only slightly, his eyes meeting mine once again, before leaving finally.

“And that would be my son. Well, one of them,” Margaret laughed behind me as she moved back to sit at her desk.

“Jack has a twin, right?” I remembered Max telling me about it but said that if I ever met them in person I wouldn’t know they were twins. Apparently, they were complete opposites in the looks department.

“Greg. He has better manners.” Margaret scoffed and sat down at her desk.

“Thank you again, Margaret.”

“No worries, just let me know if there is anything else that I can help with.”

“I’ll be sure to let you know.”

I turned and left the office, pulling the door that Jack had thrown open, closed behind me. I pulled out my phone as I walked to the elevator, ready to make the drive back home. We had already started packing but there was still so much to do before we left for California.

I shot a text to Wade, of course letting him know I had gotten the job, and then called my brother.

“You good with the salary?”

I hadn’t even gotten to two rings before he picked up the phone and started to question me. “Hello to you too.”

“Yeah, yeah, yeah. So, are you happy with it?”

“It’s more than I should be getting.” I pushed the button for the ground floor as I entered the elevator.

“You’re worth it.”

“Ha,” I laughed at him and then thought about Jack being here today. “I met someone today.”

“Oh,” There was rustling in the background on his side. I figured he was probably at work still. He always took calls for me, no matter the time or how inconvenient. “Who would that be?”

“Jack.”

“I didn’t know he was in Helen today. I know he took a personal day.”

“Yup,” I stepped off the elevator and made my way through the lobby of the office building. “Apparently getting approval from his mom about a suit.”

“The charity dinner this weekend. His family throws it every year.”

“Yeah, sure.” I pretended like it mattered to me.

‘Was he nice?” I could tell that Max was just talking to keep the conversation going.

“I mean, he most definitely came on to me but yeah, he was nice.”

“He what?!” I pulled the phone away from my ear at Max’s shout. That got his attention. “What the fuck did he say? He shouldn’t even be looking at you. You’re a married woman.”
