“We ran a few blood tests and I would love to get you in for an ultrasound so you are able to see for yourself, but by my calculations and when you were last out of town, you’ve been pregnant for about a month now.”

“Pregnant?” The word came first out of Chase’s mouth and then mine.

The doctor just said that I was pregnant. Thoughts of Savannah and me wanting to start a family came flooding in and tears of joy filled my eyes.

“A baby,” I whispered, looking over at Chase, who was still transfixed on the doctor.

“The morning sickness is most likely being caused by a food that is in your regular diet. I would assess everything you’ve been eating and monitor as you continue through the pregnancy, that way you avoid anything that makes you sick.”

“Do we need to keep a journal?” Chase asked and the doctor laughed.

“Nothing that serious, but you don’t want Erica throwing up as much as she has been. It’s torn at her esophagus, which is why she threw up blood. Monitor what you’re eating and how you feel after you eat it. Try eating in small doses at first, till you figure out what settles your stomach and what makes it upset.”

“What else do we need to do?”

Chase had taken his hand away from mine and moved closer to the doctor.

“Chase.”

“You said ultrasound. What after that? Do we need to get her started on vitamins, check-ups? Do you have an OBGYN you suggest?”

“Chase,” I said his same a little more firmly this time, but nothing, he just kept rambling off to Doctor Malcom about anything he could ask him.

“Cornelius.” The second the name was out of my mouth, Chase spun toward me. The look in his eyes was unreadable, but I held out my hand to him, calling him toward me. He moved, almost reluctantly, like if he gave in to me, it would stop his projection of moving forward with the conversation with Doctor Malcom.

“Peaches, I need to figure—”

“Stop.” I pulled him down onto the bed where he was now sitting beside me. My hand rested on his chest and I leaned in, pressing our foreheads together. “We’re going to have a baby.”

I let the words sink in between us and the tension Chase had been building erupted into tears springing from his eyes.

“I know.” He pulled me toward him in a tight embrace, arms smothering me. “I want it to be so perfect.”

I laughed and pushed at his arms, trying to breathe a little.

“It will be, because we have each other.”

“What about names and middle names?”

“We haveplentyof time to think of those things, Chase.” I laughed and shook my head. “Let’s live in the moment. Let’s be here for this child and make it the best we can.”

“You are perfection.”

He leaned in to kiss me, placing a hand on my stomach.

“We’re pregnant.”

Chase

“You’re what?” Len screamed from behind me. I had been in such a panic that I had messaged Erica’s parents, mine, and all our friends, not expecting the doctor to tell us that Erica was pregnant.

“Mom,” Erica warned, holding up a hand to halt her from coming any closer. By the look on Len’s face she was so happy she could probably crush Erica in the bear hug I knew she wanted to give her.

“I heard the word pregnant.” Lilly came bursting in right behind Erica’s mom with Alexa right on her heels. Soon the room was filled with family and friends, all buzzing with words of congratulations.

“I’ll leave you two to it and we’ll come back later for the ultrasound.”

“I’m staying for that!” Len shot her hand up as a volunteer and I’m pretty sure if everyone wanted to be here for it we wouldn’t be able to stop them.
