“What the hell!” I yelled at him, tossing back my shot before a toast could be made.
“I only told Max because I needed advice.” Chase tried to reassure me. He shot back the tequila that filled his glass and took a deep breath. “You said you wanted it to just be us. I do too.”
“I was just kidding around.” I looked over at Jack, who was moving his head back and forth between us, shock clearly written on his face. “What the hell are you guys talking about?”
“I knew something was up this whole time,” Alexa chimed in.
“You sure Max didn’t tell you?” I laughed at her.
“He didn’t and now that I know he knew, I’m going to have to get better at my investigating skills.” We all laughed at Alexa as Max brought her into his arms, placing a kiss on her forehead. My heart skipped a beat when Chase wrapped his arm around my waist.
“It can still be our secret, wife,” he said, just loud enough for me to hear. A chill broke out against my skin at the mention of the word wife. I pulled my bottom lip between my teeth, thinking about how this could work with it only still being us.
“How? Our friends know now.”
“They won’t say anything.” Chase looked around and gave them each a stern look. “At least not until Lilly and Greg figure everything out. It’ll still just be us.”
“My lips are sealed.” Jack held up three fingers in a Scout’s honor and both Alexa and Max raised their fingers too. I laughed at them and then turned back to Chase, who was looking down at me with these eyes that told me everything I wanted to hear. Chase was going to seal our lips as well.
He leaned down to me and gently pressed his lips to mine. This kiss turned into something magical, our lips saying all the words we weren’t able to in this moment.
I love you.
I’m so happy to finally have you.
I can’t wait for forever.
The words rang out to our friends, though, as a slow clap moved through them after we pulled away from each other. I beamed up at Chase, who had a wide smile on his face.
“Until the wedding, we’ll keep it our secret, just us that are here tonight,” Jack spoke up again.
“Wedding?” we all questioned him at the same time.
“Oh.” Jack shrugged and then grabbed for the shot Max hadn’t taken yet and downed it. “Did I forget to mention that Greg has a wedding planned for him and Lilly in two weeks?”
